While Jinu’s past makes it hard to see him as a fully sympathetic character, the constant voice of Gwi-Ma in his ears reminding him of his failure and making him a prisoner of his past (both literally and figuratively) is all too relatable. Gwi-Ma kept Jinu under control by replaying his most shameful memories in his mind, weaponizing his worst decisions against him to ensure he could never move past them. But despite Rumi sharing the same “patterns” as Jinu, Gwi-Ma couldn’t use this same tactic to get inside Rumi’s head and sabotage her destiny. The whispers that were intended to destroy her confidence had the opposite effect, and the words of her testimony formed the song that silenced him with authority.
One of our enemy’s most diabolical tactics to prevent us from fulfilling the Lord’s plan for our lives is telling us that we can’t escape who we are or what we have done. He whispers in our ears what we once were so he can keep us from becoming who we are meant to be. But even if every word might have been true at one time, once we commit our lives to Christ we are a new creation… and the “patterns” we once wore as marks of shame are now a victorious testimony of what He brought us through. Our past isn’t a weapon to be used against us anymore… it’s the fight song of a prisoner who has been set free.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. Revelation 12:11
And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. Colossians 2:13-15
