It’s no secret that Civilization 7 had a turbulent launch. Exactly six months ago, Civilization 7 was released to fans globally, accompanied by a sea of complaints about UI issues and aggressive AI, all met with promises from Firaxis that it remained “committed to getting this right” and that fixes were on the way.
Now, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick tells IGN that Civilization 7 will meet expectations throughout the title’s lifetime, despite Steam player counts suggesting Civilization 5 and Civilization 6 are more popular with fans. Currently, Civilization 7 has mixed reviews on Steam, and fans are still upset about the state of the game as it stands.
“I think the key thing is that Civ has always been a slow burn,” Zelnick says. “Our projections for the lifetime value of the title are very consistent with our initial expectations for the title.” Zelnick believes updates will help right the ship when it comes to Civilization 7, and he also believes Civilization 7 will meet the company’s expectations, but fans are still sounding off about the title.
In a thread posted to Reddit this week, longtime Civilization series fans have shown data to back up the popularity of Civ 5 and Civ 6. The data shows that while Civ 7 is the newest title, former titles in the series continue to run laps around it when it comes to player count.
Fans have answered why they think this is, and it’s because of how differently Civ 7 feels. One fan writes, “Civ 5 and 6 are more reliably enjoyable and diverse… 7 feels far too quick even on marathon mode with longer legacy paths” as reasons for returning to previous entries, and other fans have followed suit.
Many other fans agree that Civilization 7 doesn’t quite feel right. One fan, mellowism, says, “I think they have probably given up on trying to bring people back. It’s probably the most prudent move as well. Nothing short of a complete overhaul would make me like the game,” and that comment has 188 fans in agreement.
While Take-Two believes Civilization 7 will meet expectations, fans believe a very different story. The developers at Firaxis did launch a new update on July 24, making notable Age Transition improvements, but it remains to be seen if these updates are enough.
Even this long after release, twice as many people are playing V as playing VII. What conversations do you think are being at Firaxis?
