Microsoft is expanding the Xbox Game Pass tiers that can use cloud streaming to play games on weak hardware, just in time for the launch of Hollow Knight: Silksong, which is easily the subscription service’s biggest game of the year.
While Google Stadia may have died a swift death, other companies are championing streaming services for games. In the case of Microsoft, those who subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate have access to cloud streaming for select games, allowing them to be played through a browser.
Until now, cloud streaming has been restricted to the most expensive Xbox and PC Game Pass tiers. That’s about to change, as Microsoft has announced that it’s rolling out cloud streaming for the lower tiers.
Cloud Streaming Is Coming To Xbox Game Pass Core & Standard
Those signed up to Xbox Insider will be able to use cloud streaming on all three Xbox Game Pass tiers: Core, Standard, and Ultimate. This means that way more players will be able to experience streaming across multiple devices.
This change is happening just ahead of the launch of Hollow Knight: Silksong, which is getting a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass on September 4. Using this service, people will be able to play the Game Pass version across many more devices.
While Hollow Knight: Silksong isn’t expected to be some Crysis-level hardware guzzler, it will still require the minimum level of gaming PC specs to run. On Xbox Game Pass cloud streaming, the game will be playable on pretty much any device that can run an Internet browser and hook up a controller, so long as there’s a fast Internet connection around.
Cloud streaming has the potential to be huge, yet Microsoft has restricted access while it irons out the details. Hopefully, the full rollout will occur for non-Xbox Insider users soon, giving even more people the ability to stream games directly to their screens.
