Following the release of Doom: The Dark Ages earlier this year, as well as the presumed finale of the Doom 2016 reboot trilogy, id Software is already working on their next game.
A job posting on the ZeniMax website says that id Software is “seeking an experienced Lead Gameplay Features Programmer to join our Dallas team in the development of an unannounced video game project.”
Most of the job posting is pretty vague, with the only aspect of note possibly hinting at the gameplay for the unannounced title:
Collaborate on the implementation of new gameplay features: player and characters’ behaviors, combat and powers mechanics, user interface, etc..
That description matches what we’ve seen recently from the Doom franchise, but it honestly could mean anything. We’ve seen so many modern FPS games emulate Doom’s gameplay, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see whatever id Software is working on next borrow from what made the modern Doom games so great.
Could id Software Be Working On A New Quake Game?
We can speculate all day on what this game could be, but there have been some hints and teasers over the past few years.
As great as the Doom games have been over the years, I started to get tired of the formula with Doom: The Dark Ages, and it’s something our review agreed with. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good time, but I wouldn’t complain if the franchise took a break.
With that being said, what could id Software be cooking? The developer’s portfolio is filled with iconic franchises, including Wolfenstein, but MachineGames has been handling that series in the modern era, though they’ve been taking a break and are focusing on the Indiana Jones license. id Software also took a gamble in 2011 with Rage, a brand new IP, to mixed results.
Then there’s id Software’s other iconic franchise, the one that has been dormant for far too long: Quake. It’s been twenty years since the release of Quake 4, which, in a word, was “okay,” and 18 years since the multiplayer spin-off Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, which was disappointing. As far as a full-fledged reboot or sequel, however, there’s been nothing happening. That doesn’t mean there have been teases, though.
In the January 2024 Xbox Developer Direct, there was a small tease for what appears to be “Quake 6.” It seems a little too obvious at first glance, but Phil Spencer has talked about the importance of Quake several times over the years. He also teased the return of a franchise that’s been with Xbox “since the beginning” earlier this year. Now, there’s a 95% chance he’s talking about Halo, but if he’s busy teasing the return of iconic gaming franchises under the Xbox umbrella, then technically, Quake has been with id Software since the beginning.
I’m not saying this is definitive proof that id Software’s next game is Quake, but hey, I’m almost 40, and I just want a franchise I grew up with to get the Doom 2016 treatment.
