One of the more infamous things Call of Duty has become known for in recent history is its file size.

Take last year’s Black Ops 6, for example. Despite rumors, it launched with a size of 84.4 GB on PlayStation 5, with Activision recommending 102 GB of free space. That’s not quite the 300 GB that was rumored last year, but it’s still nothing to sneeze at.

Now, a new update, as spotted by PlayStationSize, is in the works for Call of Duty and aims to further reduce file sizes.

Call of Duty Update 01.080.000 was spotted in the PlayStation database. While the PS4 update is nice, the PS5’s is substantial.

The New Call Of Duty Update Will Free Up 100 GB On PS5

On the PlayStation 4, update 01.78 requires 81 GB of storage space. The new update, 01.80, will only need 62 GB, freeing up 19 GB of hard drive space. That’s not too bad, but it’s the PS5 where things really shine.

We’ll be going from version 01.078.000 and its hefty 126.224 GB size to 01.080.000 at 25.377 GB. That’s over 100 GB of storage space freed up.

This has sparked speculation that the necessary file size of the next Call of Duty game, Black Ops 7, will be a far more manageable storage space. It’s an excellent change of pace from what we’ve been used to in the past. Perhaps this is the key for them to help get the game on the Nintendo Switch 2?

Either way, it’ll be nice to give our hard drives a break; they’ve been working overtime with the amount of Call of Duty they’ve been hosting over the years. However, it may give way to more controversy later this year, as Black Ops 7 will include Secure Boot as an anti-cheat measure. For those unaware, it was utilized during the Battlefield 6 beta, but it has caused some people to be unable to access the game.
