Video game movies seemed like they were on the right track after the success of Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, and yes, even the Minecraft movie.
You can argue that all the momentum was cut short, however, after the disaster that was 2024’s Borderlands movie.
Directed by Eli Roth, the film was a critical and box office failure. It made only $33 million on a budget of approximately $120 million, and had a 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Believe it or not, the movie could have been far, far worse, as Randy Pitchfold recently told TheGamer at Gamescom.
Randy Pitchford Said That The Borderlands Movie Could Have Been Worse If He Directed It
Pitchford is the founder and CEO of Gearbox Studios, developers of the Borderlands series. He also served as an Executive Producer on the 2024 movie, but if he had another role, it would have, somehow, been worse than it actually was.
“It would have been way worse if I directed it,” Pitchford said. “I’m not a filmmaker. Eli Roth is an awesome filmmaker. I promise you, if I directed that movie, it’d be a disaster.”
Despite the mess that was the Borderlands movie, Pitchford indicates that it won’t deter them from possibly trying to make more movies.
“I love the Beatles, and there’s lots of Beatles music, [and] I just absolutely can’t listen to some of it. I think it’s unlistenable. Should we say, You know what? You made an unlistenable song […], therefore, make no more music. That’s not the attitude, you know, keep making music. I’m glad you tried something. Yeah, go for it. Please make more. My attitude is, if there are great creators, artists, entertainers that have something to say and they think they can only do it with Borderlands, and they can demonstrate that they can do it, I want to enable that. We don’t always succeed, but we’ve got to keep swinging.”
So there you go. The Borderlands movie was a failure that could have been an even bigger failure, but that won’t stop Pitchford and company from trying things in the future. Meanwhile, they’re going back to what works best for them this year. Borderlands 4 releases for PS5, Xbox, and PC on September 12th. The Nintendo Switch 2 version is scheduled to release on October 3rd.
