Volatile Flintbeetles is one of the many side quests to complete in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Similar to other quests in the game, this one requires you to hunt down a specific item and bring it back to the Wish board to claim a reward.
However, unlike other early-game quests, Volatile Flintbeetles puts you up against challenging, unique enemies that will likely take you a handful of tries to defeat, depending on your skill level. Even more frustrating is that they can be pretty hard to find.
Use this guide to learn how to complete the Volatile Flintbeetles quest in Hollow Knight Silksong. It will discuss all Flintbeetle locations, how to defeat Flintbeetles, and rewards for doing so.
How to Start Volatile Flintberries
Players can start the Volatile Flintbeetles quest after defeating the Fourth Chorus in the Far Fields area. Once that boss is defeated, the Volatile Flintbeetles Wish becomes available on the Wish board in Bone Bottom.
The fastest way to reach Bone Bottom is to use the game’s fast-travel system, which is immediately available after defeating the Bell Beast. Luckily, the Bone Bottom fast-travel point is automatically unlocked and doesn’t cost any Rosaries.
All Flintbeetle Locations
There are three Flintbeetles to find for the Volatile Flintbeetles Wish in Hollow Knight: Silksong, and they can all be found in the Marrow area.
Once you accept the Volatile Flintbeetles quest at the Wish board, the Flintbeetles will spawn in the locations shown in the image above. One is found on the western side of the map, one in the north, and another on the far east side of the Marrow.
If you want to find the Flintbeetles yourself without using the image, but may just need a little guidance, then I’ll give you a hint: the Flintbeetles leave behind golden dung throughout the Marrow that you can interact with to create a trail that leads to their location.
You’ll know you’ve found a Flintbeetle if you see a large, gold, rock-like object sticking out of the wall. This is actually the Flintbeetles’ shell, and you can draw it out by attacking it. Once you land a hit on the Flintbeetle, a fight will commence.
How to Beat Flintbeetles
While Flintbeetles aren’t considered a boss in Hollow Knight: Silksong, they sure do act like one. These things are pretty brutal, and the fact that you need to beat three for the Volatile Flintbeetles quest makes it all more frustrating.
To beat the Flintbeetles, you’re going to want to use your Drifter’s Cloak ability to glide above the ground, avoiding the AoE attacks. Whenever the Flintbeetle rolls, it leaves a trail that explodes, so the best way to avoid taking damage here is to glide over it.
The second attack by the Flintbeetle is its fireball attack. Sometimes the Flintbeetle will stand still, launching four fireballs in each direction. This is actually the best time to get close to the Flintbeetle, going under the fireballs, and dealing as much damage as possible.
Volatile Flintbeetles Quest rewards
After finding and defeating all three Flintbeetles, return to the Wish board in Bone Bottom to officially complete the Volatile Flintbeetles quest in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Your reward for completing this quest is a Memory Locket, which allows you to equip more Tools at once.
To use a Memory Locket, go to any save bench and open up your loadout menu, select a locked Crest slot, and hold down the corresponding button to unlock it.
