Spielberg Reportedly Wanted To Direct Call of Duty Movie

In case you didn’t know, Activision has officially given Paramount the green light to produce a live-action adaptation of Call of Duty.

While that in itself might be exciting news for franchise fans, did you know that there was a possibility at one point that the legendary Steven Spielberg would be the one to direct it?

This isn’t something the suits at Activision were pushing for either, as Spielberg himself is a fan of the Call of Duty franchise.

Call of Duty Movie Could Have Been Legendary, If Rumors Were True

The report comes from Puck, who mentions that according to “three sources,” Spielberg allegedly wanted to direct Call of Duty given the director’s endearment for the franchise. The deal breaker? It’s said to be “top-of-market” economics, final cut and full control over production and marketing that spooked Activision, which is now owned by Microsoft.

Instead, Activision went with David Ellison’s pitch that offered the video game publisher more control over the film process.

Under Paramount, the production outfit will develop, produce, and distribute a live-action feature film, which is designed to thrill its massive global fan base by delivering on the hallmarks of what fans love about the iconic series, while boldly expanding the franchise to entirely new audiences.”

There’s no director or actor attached to the film yet, though I assume it’ll be filled with Hollywood A-listers. Whomever Paramount chooses to helm the live-action film, it’s hard to top Steven Spielberg. That said, this is a rumor, and as such, should be treated with a grain of salt.

Spielberg is, of course, one director who needs no introduction. Apart from directing classics such as the Indiana Jones movies and Schindler’s List, the director also directed Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan—two films that inspired the original Call of Duty games.

In game-related news about the franchise, Activision desperately wants players to come back for Season 5 Reloaded, which kicked off yesterday, as the publisher is even giving gifts to participants.

The next Call of Duty game due is Black Ops 7, which is set for release on almost every console, though it doesn’t seem like it’s getting released on the Switch 2.
