Over the years, Xbox Game Studios’ Gears of War franchise has become a favorite series for many celebrities whose love for the franchise has gotten them cameos in several Gears games.
For example, former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista is one of Gears’ most famous celebrity fans to the point that he actually appeared as a playable multiplayer character in Gears 5 multiplayer and as an alternate voice actor for Marcus Fenix in Gears 5’s campaign.
Similarly, rappers El-P and Killer Mike appeared as multiplayer characters in Gears of War 4, alongside producing a new song for the game’s trailers entitled “Panther Like A Panther.”
Before these celebrities were immortalized in Gears of War, there was one who loved Gears so much that he actually appeared in a campaign as his own original character and recently expressed a desire to return to Gears soon: Ice-T.
Ice-T’s Hope to Return to Gears of War
On Saturday, September 6th, Ice-T responded to an X, formerly Twitter, post from user Jack Torrance237 about Ice-T’s Gears character Aaron Griffin, writing, “I’m still waiting on the call to return to the game. I told Marcus to F off. I’m still alive!”
The world-famous rapper and actor was such a massive fan of Gears of War 1 and 2 that Epic Games collaborated with Ice-T to appear in Gears of War 3’s E3 2011 presentation, write a song entitled “The Gears of War”, and play as the character Aaron Griffin in the Gears of War 3’s campaign and multiplayer.
Griffin was a former CEO of the Imulsion energy company, Griffin Imulsion Corporation, but after the COG Hammer of Dawn strikes wiped out the city of Char, Griffin went on to become a Stranded leader of fellow Hammer of Dawn survivors.
Griffin briefly appears in Gears of War 3’s campaign, reluctantly helping Delta Squad get fuel for a submarine, which ultimately costs the lives of every other survivor living at Griffin Tower.
Ice-T and Griffin have never appeared in any other Gears campaign since Gears of War 3, but Griffin is known to have survived the Locust War and his character went on to appear in the multiplayer for Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Gears of War 4, and Gears of War: Reloaded.
With Ice-T expressing interest in returning as Griffin in Gears, it would be nice to see him reprise the character in the upcoming prequel Gears of War: E-Day, possibly in in-universe TV ads for Griffin’s Corporation, or in Gears of War 6’s inevitable campaign joining the fight against the Swarm.
