Among all the side quests available in Hollow Knight: Silksong, few are as enigmatic (and disconcerting, but in a weirdly good way) as the one involving the Twisted Bud – a very strange… thing?

There is uncertainty about how to describe it, since it functions mechanically as an item (gaining storage in the inventory), but it is actually alive, so I will simply call it a “thing”.

In any case, finding it is a little tricky, and finding out what to do with it is even trickier – and it is only the beginning of a chain of events that branches off into two other secret quests, filled with dark rituals and secrets buried deep within Pharloom.

Also, after obtaining it, the Twisted Bud will cry every time you open up your menu, whether it is the inventory, quest logs, or just the map, so it can get annoying pretty fast. Luckily, we have the instructions for you to tackle this mysterious quest to avoid any headaches from the process.

Here, you will find a complete step-by-step guide to locating the Twisted Bud and quickly completing all stages of this weird quest – so you can enjoy the reward (which is pretty awesome, by the way) without losing your sanity along the way.

Where To Find the Twisted Bud in Hollow Knight: Silksong

In order to find the Twisted Bud in Hollow Knight: Silksong, you must have reached Act 2 of the story or unlocked the Faydown Cloak in Mount Fay.

It is located on the upper western side of Bilewater, and you need one of the options above to be able to access it. So, in summary, you must have progressed pretty far in the game.

However, I think that the easiest and fastest way is to simply reach Act 2 and naturally progress in the main story until you find the Whispering Vaults, which leads you to quite a direct path to our goal.

If you still want to try the Faydown Cloak road, you will need to access the region from the Sinner’s Road and survive poisonous lakes and enemies to reach the desired area – which, honestly, is going to be an extra headache that we can avoid!

That said, we will guide you throughout the Whispering Vaults. Go there and progress until you find the first room with the puzzle boxes. Head to the wall on the right (near the ceiling) and give it a few strikes with the Nail to reveal a secret passage. While inside, you can go up to snatch a Memory Locket (I highly recommend that you do) or go down to reach the Bilewater.

Before following the latter, make sure you have rested on a Bench and have no Rosaries in your pockets (find a vendor to “transform” them into Rosary Strings), because our task is going to be to arrive in Bilewater territory, collect the Twisted Bud, and deliberately die to quickly get out of that forsaken place. Also, equip the red tool Cogfly so you can deal with the flying enemies without breaking a sweat.

When you finally go down from the Whispering Vaults to Bilewater (1), you will fall straight into poisonous water. Follow the left at first until you drop to an area with multiple paths – from this point (2), what you are going to do is to keep going left as far as you can. When you can not go left anymore, hit the walls to reveal secret passages to continue going forward.

This will eventually lead you to a dead-end path, and you are going to start hearing a baby crying desperately when you finally reach the final room (3). Simply follow it to collect the Twisted Bud at the end. Now, all you have to do is be defeated by an enemy from the previous areas to quickly return to your last Bench.

Check your menu to notice it will cry constantly whenever you open your inventory, quest logs, diary, or map – and that it is quite ugly, and it looks like it got out of Bloodborne. That is all for our first step! Now let’s deliver this “thing”.

What To Do With the Twisted Bud

Fast-travel to Bellhart, rest on the Bench, and, again, make sure you have no Rosaries in your pockets. If you have some, transform them into Rosary String with the town’s vendor – you will need a huge amount of Rosaries pretty soon.

You can also talk to Pavo while here, since he is going to offer you more important information about the lovely “thing”. It looks like these weird, alive buds were quite common in Shellwood in the past, being used as offerings in dark rituals and simply disappearing after that.

After the chat, head straight to Greyroot’s cabin in Shellwood to offer her the Twisted Bud. You must have completed her earlier quest, though, called “Rite of the Pollip” (which requires you to find six Pollip Hearts in the region). Otherwise, you will not be able to give her the “thing” until you have done her previous task.

After delivering the Twisted Bud to her, accept the “Rite of Rebirth” quest and wait for the most weird cutscene in the entire game to unravel. Shortly after that, Hornet will appear in a new, dark area within Shellwood, and notice that you are now cursed: you can not heal, and your Crest and tools are gone! But fear not, we will fix that in no time.

Go all the way to the left to leave this obscure area, then head up to find a shortcut that will lead you to one of the main, bottom areas of Shellwood. Now, keep walking towards the right to reach Bellhart again, and use fast travel to Greymoor, where we need to find a doctor named Yanarby.

How To Find Yanarby in Hollow Knight: Silksong

In Greymoor, you must find Yarnaby, a doctor who was exiled from Bellhart for having “strange methods” – and can help with Hornet’s brand-new curse.

Her house is located on the upper western side of Greymoor, near the place where you met Garmond for the first time. From the fast-travel area, go left until you reach the room inside the main structure (with enemies with scissors, moving platforms, and a bunch of rats). Make your way up and enter the last room on your left.

You will find an area with some vegetation and a bell enemy. Keep walking left to find Yanarby’s house. Talk to her, and Hornet will explain her situation to make her open the door. Then, after some chat about what is going on, accept the “Infestation Operation” quest.

How To Complete Infestation Operation Quest in Hollow Knight: Silksong

As soon as you accept the “Infestation Operation” quest from Yanarby in Greymoor, you need to head straight to the Sinner’s Road – simply go to the Halfway Home tavern (1), use the elevator, and go up the platforms until you reach its entrance (2).

Rest on the Bench, then pay a visit to Benjin and Crull’s cabin (3) – if you have been in the region before, they are the ones who offer you the cockroaches’ guts quest – to claim the item that the doctor asked you for.

However, they will not simply deliver it to you, and you need to pay 260 Rosaries. Remember that I told you to “transform” your money into Rosary Strings for later use? Now it is the time to use them!

If you still need more Rosaries, my recommendation is to go back to Greymoor and spend a few minutes killing the enemies around there, since they drop a lot of coins (and it is an easier area than the Sinner’s Road, since you can not heal).

After paying them the amount they are asking, then immediately go back to Yanarby’s house to finally watch Hornet getting rid of those horrible tentacles of the Twisted Bud.

The Infestation Operation Quest Rewards

Alongside getting rid of the weird curse, you also unlock the Witch Crest, which grants Hornet some sweeping swings (like a whip) and allows her to drain life from enemies through twisted roots, accordingly to its description.

It basically adds a playstyle that revolves around unleashing a devastating attack with the Silk Bind, and it allows you to equip three blue tools and two red ones.
