Of Necromorphs And Xenomorphs: The Mind Behind Dead Space Wants To Create His Own Alien Game

The Dead Space series is one of the biggest names in sci-fi horror, successfully blending a creepy, awful atmosphere with setpieces of relentless, grisly action. In the movie world, the Alien franchise has a very similar MO, and it’s no surprise that Dead Space mastermind Glen Schofield thinks he’d be well-placed to make an Alien game.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Schofield said, “Let’s say somebody came to me and said, ‘We’re going to give you the Alien licence … I would love to make an Alien game.” Given his pedigree in the industry, it would certainly be a great fit, and it seems he thinks so himself.

Not only did he create the wonderfully horrifying Dead Space series and have a hand in all the ghastly necromorphs (each with different weaknesses when it comes to defeating them) therein, but he’s also been developing new and terrible types of aliens on his own time. “I could show you, I don’t know, maybe 100 different aliens I’ve made in Midjourney over the last two years,” he told the outlet.

There’s probably more nightmares in that little collection than in one of Tim Burton’s sketchbooks, so who knows what we might see in a hypothetical Alien game with Schofield at the helm. If it did happen, though, he was careful to emphasize that it would only be on his terms, and that it was “not even negotiable” that he would need to “own the creative.”

Hopefully there’s more in the locker after the Callisto Protocol.

Dead Space Meets Alien Is A Fantastic Prospect

I’m quite the horror buff, and I think there could be enormous potential here. Should such a thing ever actually happen in the future. Dead Space isn’t the only space horror game, but it’s one of the most influential.

Like a lot of fans, I’ve always felt that Alien works best when it’s being a little more subtle. There’s an enormous contrast between the first movie and the second in that regard.

The first installment is all about Ripley’s isolation and the lurking threat of the xenomorph, the presence of which is only directly shown briefly and/or much later. Alien Isolation took a similar tack, a more slow-paced and less weapon-reliant adventure that had a heck of an atmosphere from start to finish.

Anyone who’s seen Aliens, though, will attest that the franchise can pull off intense action and gunplay as well, though, when handled effectively. The two series share a lot in common, all told, and a Schofield-led Alien game with a generous dose of Dead Space mechanics would be a real thrill ride.

Those aliens that he’s cooked up would surely be fascinating to behold, but I think I’m most intrigued by the prospect of potentially trying to sever the limbs of a necromorph with a Plasma Cutter (what a fantastic weapon it was). Which would be a terrible idea, as they have acid blood. Schofield has previously said he might have made his last game, but there’s always hope.
