Borderlands 4 is one of the biggest launches of the year and will likely end up pushing the franchise as a whole over the 100 million copies sold mark. That’s in the future, though. How is Borderlands 4 performing right now?
Alinea Analytics claims to have that answer. The company uses its own secret formulas to estimate sales and other useful metrics, which it then supplies to publishers and developers. But they also like sharing their insights with the rest of us.
According to the latest newsletter written by Rhys Elliott, Borderlands 4 has so far managed to sell 2 million copies across PC, Xbox and PlayStation.
Elliott further breaks down the numbers for us, revealing that half of those sales have been on Steam, where the game has been drawing high concurrent player counts.
If these numbers are accurate, they’re a little soft. Borderlands 3 managed to sell 5 million copies in its first five days, as confirmed by publisher Gearbox at the time. That means Borderlands 4 has achieved less than half of those sales in roughly the same amount of time.
It isn’t helping that Borderlands 4 has faced a rough launch. PC players, especially, have not been happy with the technical performance, citing poor optimisation as a major problem. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has not taken this criticism well, going on several social media rants, effectively blaming people for having too high expectations.
All of this said, Alinea Analytic’s data should also be taken with a pinch of salt. I actually think the numbers are probably a little low and that the game is selling better than the report suggests. And like the previous games, it’ll probably continue to sell well for quite some time. However, while I think it’s selling better than Alinea believes, I wouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t doing as well as Borderlands 3.
I hope to finally get a chance to play Borderlands 4 this week.
