Subnautica 2 may be having a pretty rocky development process, to put it lightly, but it is still making progress, and they’ve revealed a horrifying new monster coming to the game.
A new dev vlog has been released (via IGN) showing off and discussing the Collector Leviathan, a new “Cthulhu-inspired beast” to hunt players who venture too deep into the ocean, and all the work they’ve been putting in to ensure they get it exactly right.
The Collector Leviathan is an intelligent creature that will roar at the player before lashing out with its four tentacles to grab them if they get too close, and if they aren’t lucky enough to get away before that happens, they’ll be devoured.
Terrifying, Intelligent, And Highly Irritable
The Collector Leviathan will prowl the sparse plains, and will be the first hostile Leviathan-class creature that players encounter in Subnautica 2.
The dev vlog goes over the design and development process for the Collector Leviathan, both for its visual design and for its AI, which is intended to make it feel “lifelike” and “responsive” as it reacts to not just the player’s actions, but also light and sound in real time.
If it notices the player, it will roar and unleash a shockwave attack, communicating its mood and actions with clear sound cues. If the player manages to hide, it will search for them for a while before eventually giving up the hunt.
This new dev vlog is the first development update for Subnautica 2 in two months, since the public falling-out between publisher Krafton and developer Unknown Worlds that included the firing of the studio’s leadership.
It’s likely a relief for Subnautica fans to know that development on the sequel is still progressing even amid the leadership swap, a lawsuit, a second lawsuit, controversy over a large bonus for the devs, and having its early access release delayed to next year.
The fans haven’t forgotten about any of that either, as the comments on the dev vlog are mostly focused on the dev team seemingly losing a planned $250 million bonus.
Even so, that hasn’t stopped Subnautica 2 from being the most wishlisted game on Steam now that Silksong has released.
