Chapter 3 of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, also known as the hot spring episode, is here, leading us to the City of Zeiss. This is where the plot starts to pick up steam and raise the stakes, revealing the true nature of the conflict involving Liberl.
Although we only have two open fields here, they are massive, and many of the chests won’t show up unless you get close to them. As always, screenshots for them will be below.
Reiterating, this walkthrough of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter will help you find the usual missable collectibles: books, recipes, and bonus BP for quests.
As capable bracers, you will be responsible for picking up and completing all subquests from the guild board. You don’t need me! I trust you.

Jenis Royal Academy
Book – Carnelia Vol. 6
At the beginning of Chapter 3, your next destination is the Air-Letten Checkpoint. Before that, fast travel to Jenis Royal Academy and go to the Clubhouse second floor to grab Carnelia Vol. 6 with Violet in the Material Archives room.
Ruan
Book – Liberl News Issue 6
In Ruan, go to the O’neil Shop, the one beside the bridge in the North District, to buy Liberl News Issue 6. You can fast travel there.
Now, go to Air-Letten and cross the Kaldia Mines to reach the Central Factory in Zeiss.
Zeiss
Book – Hertz’s Adventure Vol.1
Once you reach the Central Factory, you’ll be free to explore its interior. Go up to the second floor in the Archives room and check a bookshelf to find the first volume of Hertz’s Adventure.
Recipes – Black Pepper Soup / Spiral Pasta / Seasonal Tart
When you get to the famous City of Zeiss, go down the escalator (or moving staircase) and enter Forgel Bar. The bartender will be selling three new meals.
Make a sweet Seasonal Tart with Estelle to learn Fluffy Pancakes.
Books – Crystal Optical Theory
As soon as you make your introductions at the Guild branch in Zeiss, two new subquests will be available. One of them, called Looking for Librarian, will add two new books to the list during its process.
It’s straightforward. Talk to the requester in the Central Factory and then look for the books on the fourth and fifth floors. Once you complete the subquest, you’ll automatically gain another called Overtime, where you have to find yet another book.
While it can be completed now, I recommend doing so a bit later when the main story leads you to the same spot the subquest demands.
Recipe – Portable Bouillabaisse
While doing the subquest mentioned above, one of the books to be found is called Tomorrow’s Cooking.
Open your Book List interface, read Tomorrow’s Cooking, and you’ll learn the Portable Bouillabaisse recipe.
Proceed until you get the Elmo Pump Repair main quest.
Recipe – Bitter Tomato Sandwich
Once the Elmo Pump Repair quest begins, several new subquests will be available on the guild board. The Fresher Flavors subquest will teach you a recipe upon completion.
To knock this quest out of the park, go to the fourth floor of the Central Factory, enter the laboratory, and examine the mini-garden in the northeast. You’ll find a Bitter Tomato.
With this ingredient in hand, go talk to Ben in Forgel Bar and deliver it. The subquest will be completed, and you’ll learn the Bitter Tomato Sandwich recipe.
Bonus BP – Product Piloting
The Product Piloting subquest will have you equip a new Strega model with Estelle and trek all the way to three locales. However, to max BP earnings, you must go to five places: Elmo Village, the Wolf Fort, Sanktheim Gate, Leiston Fortress, and Air-Letten.
The Trails in the Sky remake made this quest way easier, because if you’ve already visited those places, now you only need to equip the sneakers and fast travel there. The game will let you know if the journey paid off. After visiting all five places, go back to the quest giver, and you’ll earn 2 bonus BP.
Sanktheim Gate
Recipe – Meat Lover’s Hot Pot
Eventually, the main story will lead you to Sanktheim Gate. However, if you’re doing the subquest above, you’ll visit it earlier.
Take the opportunity to talk to the cook and buy the Meat Lover’s Hot Pot meal to learn its recipe.
Wolf Fort
Bonus BP – Cupid on Cue
When you reach Wolf Fort, a hidden subquest awaits you, meaning it’s not triggered via the Guild board.
Talk to Private Brahm to start his quest. It’s as simple as delivering a letter. However, if you also deliver a gift Fey likes, you’ll gain extra BP.
The best gift is the Wool Knit Hat, bought at the Bell Station store in Zeiss. You can fast travel there. Brahm gave you 2000 mira, which also serves as a clue.
Once you deliver the letter alongside the Wool Hat, you’ll earn 4 bonus BP for playing matchmaker.
Crimson Tower
Recipe – Infernal Fried Eggs
Near Wolf Fort is the Crimson Tower, and, like all the other towers, it is also filled with chests containing interesting items. On the fifth floor, one of those chests will give you an Infernal Fried Eggs meal.
Cook it with Joshua to learn a new customized dish: the Demi-glace Omelette Rice.
Elmo Village
Recipe – Soft-Boiled Hot Spring Egg
As soon as you arrive in Elmo, make a left and enter the Autumn Souvenirs item shop to buy some soft-boiled eggs.
Book – The Erbe Woodpecker
If you complete the Looking for Librarian subquest, another one automatically starts, called Overtime. Your duty is to find The Erbe Woodpecker book, and as it happens, it’s in the Maple Leaf Inn in Elmo Village.
Go to the back, where the hot springs are, and down the staircase. Check the fountain to find the book. After you deliver it, you’ll start a subquest called Over-Overtime, where you have to find another book, which we’ll do in a bit after repairing Elmo’s pump.
Recipes – Fruit Milk / Special Eggnog / Monster Fish Sashimi / Wild Veggie Hot Pot
Once the repairs are done, the shop inside the Maple Inn will be back up. The clerk will be selling four new meals, all of which are just waiting to be cooked by you.
Tratt Plain Road
Book – Hertz’s Adventure Vol. 2
You can complete the Over-Overtime subquest as soon as it’s available, but I waited until the events at the hot springs ended.
Once you need to return to Zeiss, stop by the open space found between the Crimson Tower and Wolf Fort to unearth the Hertz’s Adventure Vol. 2 book. You won’t be able to complete the subquest immediately for story reasons, but we’ll get to it.
Central Factory

The main story will take you to a hazy Central Factory. Once there, notice on your minimap several blue exclamation marks. Each one you interact with will give you 1 bonus BP.
What you need to do, then, is avoid the third floor while removing all the smoke grenades you can. Altogether, there are five spots you need to interact with.
These are the locations of the canisters:
- To the left on the first floor.
- In the basement, behind some boxes.
- Near the elevator on the second floor.
- By the blackboard on the fourth floor.
- In the Design Room’s corner on the third floor.
I left the third floor for last in case you accidentally enter Russell’s room and push the story forward. After finding all five, go to the main quest marker.
Crimson Tower

After the events, your next destination will be the Crimson Tower. Once you face off against some mutts, three choices will appear. You must pick “Those guys in black are behind this?” to earn 3 bonus BP. However, before going to the next main area, let’s visit Wolf Fort.
Wolf Fort
Book – Carnelia Vol. 7
Before climbing the tower, go to Wolf Fort and talk to Bruno to receive Carnelia Vol. 7. If he isn’t here, it’s because you haven’t completed his subquest, Cargo Car.
Remember what I told you about always completing every subquest before progressing with the main one? Yeah.
Zeiss
Book – Liberl News Issue 7
After completing the story beats involving the Zemuria Moss, a new day will begin, and you’ll need to visit the Bracer Guild. Before that, go to Bell Station to buy Liberl News Issue 7.

Then you head to Leiston Fortress. On two occasions, options will appear. On the first opportunity, it doesn’t matter which choice you make.
When returning to the guild, the best option is The Royal Guard is being framed? If you do it correctly, you’ll gain three bonus BP for the main quest.
Book – 31 Cypress Tree
As I said, you could have completed Over-Overtime and initiated the subsequent quest, Over-Over-Overtime, before the hot spring storyline. It won’t involve combat, so you may as well.
However, I waited until we had four party members just because. Once you start Over-Over-Overtime, you should go to Sanktheim Gate and look for the 31 Cypress Tree book. It’s close to the roof.
On the original Trails in the Sky, these chain quest riddles were quite tricky to solve on your own. Markers both help and take away some of the fun.
Leiston Fortress

Once you rescue you-know-who, you’ll have to flee Leiston Fortress. Notice on the minimap that the enemies have a vision radius. Your objective is to reach the quest marker without being spotted.
It’s effortlessly easy. You just have to avoid their line of sight and sprint toward the objective. If you do it correctly, three more BP await you.
Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter – Chapter 3 Chest Locations
Zeiss has a sprawling, open field, so pay close attention when traversing it, as some chests may not appear on the map if you are too far away.
Kaldia Tunnel
This is the tunnel connecting Ruan to Zeiss. It’s narrow and thin, so sorry if the screenshot is a bit shabby.
Kaldia Limestone Cave
This is the limestone cave found in Kaldia Tunnel. You don’t have to explore it from the get-go, because the main story will lead you to it eventually.
Tratt Plains Road
This is the gigantic open field south of Zeiss that leads to the Wolf Fort, Crimson Tower, and Elmo Village. Some chests will only appear on the map if you’re close enough to them.
Ritter Roadway
This roadway connects Zeiss to the Sanktheim Gate, the checkpoint to Grancel.
Soldat Army Road
The path leads to the Leiston Fortress. Two solitary chests here.
Crimson Tower
Yet another colored tower filled with treasure chests just for you.
