Medieval, fantasy, and open world are some of the most popular gaming genres out there. Today, we ask ourselves what games incorporate all three genres so well that they deserve a spot in the hall of fame of the best titles you can check out if you’re into this exact trio.
So, if you are a fan of this genre combination, then you have come to the right place to find your next favorite games. All of these titles feature more lore, monsters, and expansive worlds than you can shake a broadsword at.
While it wasn’t easy to find good games that feature all three genres, I was ultimately able to narrow it down to these eight titles, which I will for you here.
8 Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
FOR VALHALLA!
There was a time when Assassin’s Creed prioritized realism and historical accuracy. Now it’s somewhat of a fantasy game, with AC Valhalla being set in medieval times but with a healthy dose of the mystical.
If you are a fan of Ubisoft’s open-world games, then Valhalla can take you through its humongous open world, filled with checkposts to clear, while offering numerous builds and nothing short of hundreds of hours of playtime.
Overall, I can say that while Valhalla may as well be the biggest game on this list, it still has some shortcomings, such as repetitive combat and an uninspired gameplay loop, which is why it ranks at the bottom.
7 Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor
The Game That Introduced The Nemesis System
If you are a fan of Batman: Arkham and The Lord of the Rings, then Shadow Of Mordor is right up your alley, with its combat taking direct inspiration from the Arkham games and being set in the Lord of the Rings universe.
Besides its absolutely fantastic combat, Shadow Of Mordor also introduced the revolutionary Nemesis system, which allowed certain enemies to remember you, and say special dialogue depending on how your last encounter with them was. They would call you a coward if you ran away, they would be furious at you if you nearly killed them last time, and overall, it gave the game a sense of realism.
It’s a big shame that WB patented this system, so other games can’t use it, but in terms of the game itself, it is easily among the best medieval open-world games that you can enjoy today. And if you fall in love with this one, then you also have Shadow of War to play next.
6 Dragon Age: Inquisition
Prime Time Of Dragon Age
If strategy games are more your style, then Dragon Age: Inquisition is one of the best open-world medieval fantasy games that you can play nowadays. From dragons and magic to an open world filled with secrets to uncover, this game has all the goodies that you are looking for.
All the while, it also features the companion approval system that you might be familiar with from Baldur’s Gate 3. If your companion likes you too much, they fall head over heels for you; if it’s the other way around, they might as well just leave your group.
Overall, Dragon Age: Inquisition came out in what is known as the prime time of Dragon Age, and for me personally, it has aged extremely well over the years. You shouldn’t have any sort of trouble playing it today.
5 Dragon’s Dogma 2
The Only Game That Lets You Climb Monsters
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is certainly a unique game with a lot of emphasis on ensuring that the player actually explores its open world and has a fun time doing so. It doesn’t have the traditional quest marker system, and players are expected to find their way on their own or make use of whatever is available from their pawns.
But besides the open world, its overall fantasy element is straight up phenomenal, with giant enemies being able to ambush you out of nowhere while you are traveling in your cart, and actually giving you an option to climb the monsters as well.
If you are looking for a game that puts more emphasis on its monster fights and exploration, then Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the next game you need to play.
4 The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
Explore An Enchanting World
While this game focuses more on the fantasy aspect rather than a medieval setting, the protagonist, Link, is literally a royal knight given the duty to protect the princess. And the world itself has much semblance to a somewhat jolly medieval setting.
Regardless, Breath Of The Wild is also one of the best open-world exploration games on the market as well, with its enchanting open world design making it hard not to invest 100+ hours exploring every nook and cranny.
It is also one of the games that offer the most freedom, making it an easy contender for the top 5. The only reason it’s not higher on this list is that some might not accept this as a medieval game, but I think there’s a case to be made.
The Old GOAT
As we reach the top 3, we already know that this list couldn’t be finished without mentioning Skyrim, as it is a complete package of medieval fantasy, with swords, bows, dragons, magic, and whatnot.
There is no doubt that Skyrim is one of the best medieval fantasy games on the market, offering 100+ hours of content and allowing you to switch things up further for your next playthrough with its official mod support as well.
While Skyrim is known to be a hit or miss for some, one thing is certain: if it’s a hit for you, you won’t be getting off it for the next 300 hours.
2 Elden Ring
Difficult Beyond Measure
As Skyrim started showing its old age, Elden Ring came along to reignite the passion for open-world medieval fantasy games. With countless spells, builds, enemy types, and brutalizing boss fights, it is among the best games of our time.
Where Skyrim walked, Elden Ring ran, by showcasing some of the best boss fights and level design of our time. With the option to play in co-op, overall, Elden Ring is one of the best games you can play right now, solo or with friends.
Just be ready to take on one of the hardest experiences in gaming history, as its DLC’s final boss is easily the hardest boss I have fought in all my years of gaming.
1 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Undisputed King Of Medieval Titles
When it comes to medieval games, The Witcher 3 offers a perfect blend of the grim reality of medieval times with its own dark fantasy, while incorporating serious issues of discrimination among the denizens of its world.
It is a game that perfectly captures the discriminatory essence of medieval times, along with its own wide array of monsters, spells, and potions. And overall, it is one of the most story-rich and best open-world games currently on the market.
Not to mention that its DLCs also consist of some of the best stories in gaming, as they constantly challenge your moral compass, easily making it the best open-world medieval fantasy game of our time.
