It only took a few years, but the latest hotfix for Baldur’s Gate 3 has resulted in a native Steam Deck build for the game, one that promises better performance than ever before.
Baldur’s Gate 3 launched on PC and PS5, and fans were eager to see how it worked on Steam Deck at release. The results were spotty for a while, especially when the player reached Act 3, where the NPCs in Baldur’s Gate 3 caused the performance to tank, but it was gradually improved over time.
While Larian Studios might be hard at work on its next project, it’s still releasing updates for Baldur’s Gate 3. A new post on the official Baldur’s Gate 3 website has announced that Hotfix #34 comes with a build of the game intended for the Steam Deck, with a number of improvements.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Hotfix #34 Introduces Native Steam Deck Build
The native Steam Deck build for Baldur’s Gate 3 is intended to have a better framerate, faster load times, and smoother overall performance.
This is due to the game running natively on Steam Deck hardware, rather than via Proton, which was consuming processing power.
Hotfix #34 isn’t just about the Steam Deck build, as there have also been a number of improvements made to the Xbox Series X/S version of the game, as well as a few overall updates for other versions of the game.
It’s surprising that it has taken this long for Baldur’s Gate 3 to get a dedicated Steam Deck build, considering the game has been out for two years and has received a ton of other patches. Maybe the developers were waiting for Baldur’s Gate 3 to be as feature-complete as possible before investing time into a Steam Deck build, as Larian has confirmed that no more new content is coming to the game.
