Here’s the good news about Borderlands 4: it’s really fun to play!
In our review, we praised the game as a return to form for the franchise after some disappointing entries, notably Borderlands 3.
Borderlands 4 excels in everything its predecessors struggled with. The sheer diversity of characters, gear, and ways to have fun is never-ending, and the open-world format is a surprisingly welcome addition to this amazing co-op FPS. Borderlands 4 is a leap in the right direction, and I can only hope that this trend continues upwards for the rest of the franchise.
Now for the bad news: the game’s performance.
There’s been a lot to say about how poorly optimized the game is on all platforms. Gearbox Studios CEO Randy Pitchford hasn’t exactly been helping the situation, but the development team is, saying that addressing these concerns is a “top priority” for the studio.
In the wake of all that, it’s easy to forget that while PC, PS5, and Xbox owners are doing what they can to enjoy their time with Borderlands 4, one platform is still on the outside looking in. It looks like they’ll be that way for a bit longer.
Borderlands 4 “Needs Additional Development” For Nintendo Switch 2, According To Gearbox
On social media, the official Borderlands account announced that the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game has been cancelled.
“We do not take this decision lightly,” they said in a statement, “but are committed to ensuring we deliver the best possible experience to our fans, and the game needs additional development and polish time to do that. Our hope is to also better align this release with the addition of cross saves, which we are working on and recognize is very important. We will update you all on the new release timing once we’ve fully adjusted our plans.”
All digital pre-orders for Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 have been cancelled and are eligible for a refund, in accordance with Nintendo’s policy.
There have been plenty of questions surrounding the game’s performance on Switch 2, leading to the previously slated launch of October 3rd. However, given the problems the game is having on more powerful platforms, Gearbox has instead opted to play it safe and give the game some more time in the oven rather than rushing it out.
Is it frustrating? Yes. Is it nice to see a developer be proactive and prevent a poorly optimized game from shipping? Absolutely.
