Magic: The Gathering‘s plunge into the Marvel multiverse began on Sept. 26, with a set of Spider-Man cards kicking off an ongoing collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and the storied comic book publisher. Magic head designer Mark Rosewater has also already confirmed that future Marvel sets were in the works, with the next one coming in 2026. And the inclusion of a Soul Stone card in the Spider-Man collection hinted at plans for an eventual Avengers-level crossover. We assumed it would take a few years to get there, but at MagicCon Atlanta last weekend, Wizards revealed that next year’s Marvel set will jump straight to the big event.
Marvel Super Heroes is coming in June 2026. The upcoming Universe Beyond set was officially revealed during the Preview panel at MagicCon. Afterward, Rosewater and several other Magic employees spoke to the press during a Q&A attended by Polygon, where he revealed more specifics.
“Unlike Spider-Man, which is focused on one character, this is focused on a lot more characters,” Rosewater said. “The way I would think of it is Avengers and Avengers-related characters.”
The Avengers have had many members over the years, and Wizards showed off art depicting Thor, Iron Man, Black Panther, the Wasp, War Machine, She-Hulk, and Wolverine. Like Marvel’s Spider-Man, the set is focused on New York and will also include other heroes who operate out of the Big Apple, including The Fantastic Four, S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury, and the Heroes for Hire team, which features street-level characters like Luke Cage, Iron First, Misty Knight, and Colleen Wing.
“Marvel’s all about the characters,” Rosewater said. “One of the things that’s fun about the Marvel license is, when I say the roster goes deep, it goes deep.”
The set will also include the Young Avengers, previewed in some very cute art showing Captain Marvel shaking hands with Ms. Marvel, Ant-Man high-fiving Cassie Lang, Wiccan working magic with the Scarlet Witch, and Hawkeye and Pizza Dog watching Kate Bishop line up a shot. Squirrel Girl is depicted in one of her most iconic battles, taking down Doctor Doom with an army of squirrels.
“[Squirrel Girl is] both a deep cut for the fans and something Magic players would like in a vacuum,” Rosewater said. “For Marvel fans, she’s a beloved character and people are really excited to see her. If Marvel just isn’t your thing, there’s so many squirrel fans in Magic. I guarantee if you play a squirrel deck, she’s great in your squirrel deck.”
Villains are also well represented. There’s a group shot including Abomination, Loki, M.O.D.O.K., Ultron, Taskmaster, Baron Zemo, Dr. Doom, and Leader, plus an image of a shirtless Killmonger standing in Wakanda. But Rosewater promises the set isn’t as broad as it looks.
“There’s lots of things we’re not doing,” he said. “We have more Marvel sets coming, so it is a little bit tighter than you might think. Marvel is just very broad and has lots and lots of different things and there’s lots of things that we can and will do, but we’re not doing here.”
Early reveals haven’t shown the Guardians of the Galaxy, who could easily lead a set following their adventures in outer space. While a few mutants make an appearance, an X-Men-focused set also feels like a safe bet for the future.
