The upcoming FPS game, Hell Let Loose: Vietnam, will recreate the conflict of the Vietnam War by immersing players in large-scale jungle warfare battles. Team 17 and development partner Expression Games, are going above and beyond to ensure the authenticity of the weaponry, animations, and audio in their new game, and have been working closely with the Royal Armouries since 2024.
The Hell Let Loose: Vietnam development team captured images, scans, video, and audio recordings of weapons from the Royal Armouries extensive collection, and have used the material to give gamers a historically accurate glimpse of what it was like for a soldier during the Vietnam War.
Players will have the choice to play as either the US Armed Forces or the North Vietnamese Army, and deploy tanks, helicopters, and mortars, or build tunnels and utilize stealth tactics to set up ambushes.
Team 17 And Expression Games Team Up With The Royal Armouries
The Hell Let Loose series focuses on creating gritty, realistic warfare experiences, with weaponry and tactics that are authentic to the time period—and what better way to do that than with the historical expertise of the Royal Armouries.
Working with the Royal Armouries and Jonathan Ferguson [Keeper of Firearms & Artillery] was a unique experience for our team. Their detailed knowledge and collection of historical weapons was invaluable in helping us achieve visual, animation and audio authenticity in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam.
– Matt White, Creative Director at Expression Games
This isn’t the first time the Royal Armouries Museum has shared its wealth of knowledge with the gaming world, as their Keeper of Firearms & Artillery, Jonathan Ferguson, is frequently featured on the EXP Youtube Channel, giving insight into the historical accuracy of video game weapons.
The Royal Armouries Museum, located in Leeds, features thousands of historical pieces, including swords, firearms, artillery, and the armor of an Indian war elephant. With the mission of preserving history and sharing knowledge with the world, this partnership between HLL and the Royal Armouries is proof that video games can be a great way for people to learn about historical events.
As one of the world’s leading museums of arms and armour, we are committed to sharing our collections and expertise with new audiences. This partnership allows us to bring an element of historical accuracy into the interactive entertainment space, offering players vivid in-game detail and fresh ways to engage with the stories and heritage that the Royal Armouries preserves.
– Jack Wanstall, Senior Licensing & Partnerships Manager, Royal Armouries
The Royal Armouries has served as the primary reference point for Hell Let Loose: Vietnam’s in-game weapon visuals, animations, and audio, and will launch in 2026. For gamers who haven’t experienced the HLL series yet, the original WWII-based game is still receiving new content and updates, including the addition of the game’s largest urban map coming this November.
