Another video game project is doomed to the realm of “what if” and unrealized potential, as Starbreeze has announced the cancellation of its Dungeons & Dragons heist game, following the poor reception and financial losses incurred by Payday 3.

Starbreeze announced in 2023 that it was developing a Dungeons & Dragons co-op multiplayer game. This was part of a rush of D&D game announcements, following the incredible success of Baldur’s Gate 3. Little was ever shown of Project Baxter, but it had a strong pedigree, considering it was being made by the Payday team.

Those hoping to plunder the vaults of Waterdeep will be disappointed to learn that Project Baxter has officially been canceled. Starbreeze made this announcement on its official website, along with a ton of bad news about its future.

Starbreeze Cancels D&D Game To Focus On Payday

Starbreeze has had lay off staff and has taken a huge financial loss, all due to the poor reception to Payday 3. Indeed, the studio has had to fully shift its focus onto the Payday series, as it seeks to strengthen its core focus.

This likely means that the team will go back to focusing on Payday 2, which has a much bigger player base than its sequel. The fact that Payday 3 never clicked with the audience is the reason for the company’s cancellation of Project Baxter, as interest in the game quickly dried up.

There’s also the question of a potential Payday 4, but considering the reception to Payday 3, it’s likely that the developers will stick with what works, at least for the near future.

The idea of a D&D heist game was always a tough sell. The reason people loved Baldur’s Gate 3 was due to how it emulated the feeling of the tabletop game, so reskinning Payday with swords and spells was likely never going to be a hit. That being said, it’s a rough position for the studio to be in, and DualShockers hopes the developers who lost their jobs find new roles soon.
