It’s pretty wild to think that nearly 40 years after release, Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is still surprising fans and giving them reasons to throw their controllers at the wall, since brand-new stages have just been discovered.

Giving some context, one of the most (in)famous game glitches is the Minus World one in the original Super Mario Bros. on NES, which surprisingly allowed players to access “secret levels” by having Mario move a certain way and ending up in the wrong area.

Now, speedrunner and YouTuber Kosmic has found an equivalent to that glitch for The Lost Levels, known in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2.

Hidden Minus Worlds Uncovered in The Lost Levels After Nearly 40 Years

In a recent YouTube video, Kosmic reveals and explains that he has discovered a whole new set of “Minus World stages” in The Lost Levels, nearly four decades after their initial release.

As expected, his methodology is complex and time-consuming, requiring tons of expert game manipulation that eventually forces a crash and unlocks the broken content.

What I found quite interesting is that it is only possible to trigger the glitch on a copy of the Super Mario All-Stars collection on the SNES, since this specific version has minor technical differences compared to the Western version, allowing you to exploit certain memory manipulations.

That also means that there’s no emulation or hacking required, so you or even I could get a copy and try this out! You can check his full process and the new “secret stages” in the video below.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels was originally launched in 1986 for the Family Computer Disk System in Japan, with significantly more challenging levels than the original game. It finally came out in Western countries in 1993 as part of the Super Mario All-Stars collection on the SNES.
