For several months now, Sony has been in an ongoing legal battle against Tencent Games and Polaris Quest’s Light of Motiram for allegedly ripping off Guerrilla Games’ Horizon franchise, with Sony suing the China-based gaming publisher in July and calling Motiram a “slavish clone” of Horizon.
As soon as Motiram was revealed in late 2024, players worldwide immediately saw similarities between Horizon and Motiram, with both being third-person action games set in a post-apocalyptic world where tribal humans, a red-haired woman in particular, must struggle to survive among colossal animalistic machines.
Tencent recently motioned to dismiss the suit, calling Sony’s arguments “nonsense”, but Sony motioned for a preliminary injunction in response in order to prevent Tencent from being able to develop or release Motiram.
While Sony hopes to succeed with the suit by the end of the year, the lawsuit is still ongoing, but court documents have recently revealed advancements in other Horizon projects, specifically the upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn film adaptation.
The Current State of Horizon Zero Dawn’s Movie
In January 2025, Sony officially announced that a Horizon Zero Dawn movie was in the works with PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures, following the shuttering of a planned Horizon show at Netflix.
Since then, little information has been revealed about the adaptation until October 16th, when Head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash revealed in his sworn declaration filed for the ongoing lawsuit that the Horizon Zero Dawn film has a working script and the production companies are currently looking for a director to head the film.
No one has been officially cast as Aloy yet, but she is set to be a “key icon in the anticipated film”, with the movie expected to begin shooting sometime in 2026 and premiering sometime in 2027.
This would be a perfect year to release a Horizon Zero Dawn film as it would coincide with the Horizon franchise’s 10th anniversary in February 2027 and possibly coincide with the rumored launch of the PlayStation 6 and Horizon 3.
Sony and Guerrilla executives have already expressed concern that Light of Motiram has and will continue to confuse players and harm the growth of the Horizon franchise, with Guerrilla Games Studio Director Jan-Bart van Beek stating in his own sworn declaration that, “The confusion caused by Light of Motiram promotions has already interfered with our existing Horizon development strategy, as there is a risk that future expansion could be incorrectly interpreted as copying Light of Motiram.”
