I’ve always been fascinated by what sparks the imagination of the creative minds behind the games we play, and also how inspiration can come from the most unexpected places, even from a completely different title or genre.
That’s exactly the case with Borderlands 4, whose creative director recently revealed that he might never have entered the gaming industry if it weren’t for his passion for old-school classics – plus a fair bit of intense matches on Call of Duty and Overwatch these days.
From Modding Quake And Sonic To Creating Borderlands 4
In a recent interview with Shacknews, Graeme Timmins, the creative director behind Borderlands 4, opened up about the classic titles that sparked his love for game development, and how he taught himself how to be a level designer while messing around with Quake and Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
“[My favorite game] of all time? It’s really two”, explains Timmins. “I go back to Quake. I learned how to be a level designer in Quake. I’m a self-taught level designer. Back in the day, in the WorldCraft [graphical level editor], I made a bunch of levels for Quake and Quake 2. I played with Quake 3 a bit. And then Sonic the Hedgehog 2, probably. I got my start as a kid, putting in the debug code and pretending I was a level designer, putting stuff around.”
Timmins also admitted that he was a “SEGA kid” growing up, with classics like Virtua Fighter, Nights into Dreams, Streets of Rage, and Guardian Heroes holding a special place in his heart.
His love for games doesn’t stop with the retro hits, though. These days, the Borderlands 4 creative director spends plenty of late nights battling it out in Overwatch 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone. “I still play Overwatch almost every night – and I get very passionate about it,” he joked. “I’ll just leave it at that.”
Borderlands 4 was originally released on September 12, 2025, and is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via the Epic Games Store and Steam), with a release for Nintendo Switch 2 slated for the near future.
