JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution has a chance to fix the anime's biggest controversy

JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution isn’t exactly an original movie. Instead, the latest film from the JuJutsu Kaisen fantasy saga is a compilation of the anime’s second season stitched together with the first two episodes of its next season, which kicks off the Culling Games arc from the original manga. This makes Execution, which just got a new trailer, the earliest way to watch the beginning of the upcoming season ahead of its January 2026 premiere. The film debuts in Japan on Nov. 7, and in North America on Dec. 5.

In the Culling Game arc, Special Grade sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu (the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen 0) finally joins the anime series and is tasked by jujutsu higher-ups to execute his fellow student Yuji Itadori. Their long-awaited clash unfolds for the first time on the big screen, and if the animators at Mappa have something as special as episodes 40 and 41 (“Thunderclap” part 1 and 2) waiting in the wings for fans this holiday season, JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution may end up being the gift that we’ve been waiting for.

“Thunderclap” from season 2 is often hailed as one of the greatest sequences in anime history, in spite of all the controversy in 2023 when the episodes first debuted. It was reported that the animation team were suffering from harsh deadlines to the point, and the final version that aired at the time was unfinished and reportedly not what the animators initially intended.

The sequence involves a heavily anticipated fight between two powerful sorcerers, Sukuna and Mahoraga. It features experimental animation, superb cinematography, and intense action. A subsequent Blu-ray release gave the animators a chance to add additional scenes to flesh out the battle. So it seemed possible Execution could improve the battle even more. However, looking at the new trailer, it’s hard to tell if that fight has received any additional treatment. It’d be a shame if it didn’t, because a sequence that grand has to be seen on the biggest screen with the best presentation possible.

The second season of JuJutsu Kaisen propelled the series to become 2024’s anime of the year, and when episodes 40 and 41 were released back to back, it was the topic of conversation for weeks in the anime community. Fans knew about the problems with the production, which made them appreciate what they saw even more. People clamored to see if the Blu-ray, released on March 18, would add any additional scenes to the fight or to see if it was polished at all, and were elated to see just that, alongside reshades, more motion, and different color grading. But the Blu-ray can only touch up what has already been presented in the television version, whereas the film has the opportunity to do the sequence justice with additional alterations and new animations entirely.

As it stands, these two episodes serve as the magnum opus of JuJutsu Kaisen, and should be treated as such by Mappa, especially considering the controversy they faced at the time. It’s garnered the attention of anime fans all over the world, and the Culling Games is one of the most anticipated anime arcs of next year. If Mappa wants to start the year off right, run back the anime’s greatest sequence once again in theaters with the best interpretation we’ve seen yet.
