Despite having a dynamic and reactive open world, Ghost of Yotei can still prove to be a daunting experience for the most casual player, especially when you think about how it ramps up the combat element since the previous game.
But even more so, this time around, it has some particularly ambiguous mechanics that it doesn’t share openly with you, and hey, that’s completely fine. A couple of my friends kept wondering about some mechanics, too, so you’re not alone here.
However, the one that has everyone in a pickle and will have others confused about is the Weapon Aligned state. Thankfully, I’m here to explain just that in the brief guide I’ve prepared below on the Weapon Alignment mechanic.
What Does Being Weapon Aligned Mean?
I’m pretty sure the main concern about this mechanic is going to stem from you glancing over the perks of the Armor of the Undying that you get from one of the game’s various Mythic Tales.
But once you find out the simple answer behind this otherwise slightly deluded mechanic, you’ll be using this gear piece the most like me, since it is one of the best armor sets in the game if you’re effectively switching your weapons during combat.
Weapon Aligned is the state in which you use the correct weapon against the opposing one. It’s similar to how you used Jin’s stances to effectively stagger enemies in Ghost of Tsushima, sort of like a game of rock-paper-scissors.
I’ve detailed which weapon counters the other below for your convenience.
|
Weapon |
Effective Against |
|---|---|
|
Wolf Blade (Katana) |
Against other Katanas. It will be Atsu’s primary weapon against most duels or one-on-one fights. |
|
Dual Katana |
Against Polearms. The quick pace of the heavy strikes from this weapon can easily trigger the stagger break of polearm-wielding enemies. |
|
Kusarigama |
Against enemies with Shields. Probably your least-used weapon, since you can quickly break shielded enemies using the “Claw and Talon” Technique on the weapon. |
|
Yari |
Against enemies with Sickles. One of the most fun weapons to use in the game, plus the Typhoon Kick is crazy good at triggering staggers on sickle-wielding foes. |
|
Odachi |
Against Brutes. You can obviously use this against any kind of opposing weapon, but it’s another situational weapon that’s best used against those annoying Brute-type enemies. |
Benefits of Being Weapon Aligned
You’re probably asking yourself, what’s the point when you can pretty just use any weapon at your heart’s content, right? I mean, you most certainly can, but there’s a bit of a caveat here.
The advantage of using the appropriate armament against the enemy and being Weapon Aligned will grant Atsu increased stagger and weapon damage. And this can matter a ton if you’re playing on hard or the notoriously hellish Lethal difficulty.
Heavy attacks from each weapon will also deal increasingly more stagger damage whilst your Weapon Aligned. Thus, if you’re fighting a large group of enemies or even in a duel, quickly swapping to the effective weapon will ensure you maintain an optimal rhythm and have an easier time with the game’s combat.
Lastly, this will also encourage most players to immediately unlock all of Atsu’s weapons by visiting the weapon masters in their respective regions.
If you’re just starting, I recommend going after the Oni first and getting the Yari before moving on to the Kitsune for an easier time against the latter’s boss fight.
