A “little more than a month ago”, Hello Games dropped an update that brought No Man’s Sky to a new all-time peak playercount. As fresh as that seems, it’s all old news now, as the next free update to No Man’s Sky has already dropped. The “Breach” update is all about salvaging ship parts from a dead universe.
Taking apparent inspiration from the success of last update, this new update offers a ton of new ways for you to customize your spaceship. The blog post discussing the update makes special mention of how inspired the devs were by seeing the creativity of the game’s players, and the Breach update expands the game ever further in that direction.
“It has provided some of my favorite moments of these last nine years of development,” the post reads, “seeing these beautiful, creative, sci-fi ships that other players have built. It has made us instantly excited to work on a new update!”
As for the contents of the update itself, the “Breach Expedition” will take you into something very much in the Halloween spirit. You’ll drift among the haunting wrecks of destroyed spaceships, potentially stumbling into the remains of the Fireship Arcadia — an apparent “jewel in the crown” of this sea of ruin.
There’s lore here, of course, to explain why these ships have come to rest here. But that update post isn’t giving any spoilers; you’ll have to fly in blind. It does offer a hint, though: the Breach update “embraces the darker side of the universe.”
And in more cheery news, the update also adds a bunch of quality-of-life features to the ship-building menus, including the ability to apply a single color palette to an entire ship in one go. You can also pick up three new posters, and collect special ship parts with a design inspired by Atlas, the “crimson heartbeat of the universe itself.”
“It has been a crazy year for the No Man’s Sky team” Sean Murray said with today’s reveal (thanks, Eurogamer), “and we’re so proud and pleased to be able to continue working on this game we all love so much nine years after launch.”
Seeing so many folks enjoying Voyagers has really inspired us, and we can’t wait for you to see what we have in store in future.
Hello Games’ Community Spotlight Confuses A Lobster For a Scorpion
The post covering the No Man’s Sky ‘Breach’ update also features a community spotlight of several player-made ships, one of which drew a bit of side-eye from fans. Not because the ship was built strangely, but because someone at Hello Games looked at a lobster and thought “scorpion” instead.
“Guys I’m Pretty Sure That’s a Lobster”, reads a post on the No Man’s Sky subreddit, highlighting the error.
In Hello Games’ defense, lobsters and scorpions do look a touch similar. You know, as long as you ignore the most scorpion-y thing about a scorpion: the big stinger tail.
As of writing, the error has not been corrected. You can still go to the blog post and give yourself a good chuckle before you stop procrastinating and get back to work.
