Xbox has found yet another way to raise prices, this time by increasing the cost of its Xbox Development Kit from $1,500 to $2,000. This 33% price hike, first reported by The Verge, is the latest in a long line of expensive choices from the company. Just a few weeks ago, a Game Pass subscription price increase had users in an uproar. This time around, the consequences of this change will affect developers as well as players.

Dev kits are specialized versions of consoles with unique tools and debug capabilities, and are what developers use to create games for different platforms. The amount of dev kits a company requires depends on the size of a game’s team — smaller studios may only need one or two, but larger operations often require more for testing purposes.

Representatives from the company claim this price increase “reflects macroeconomic developments,” which is the exact verbiage used to justify the Xbox cost hike from earlier this year. While these price changes do align with the recent 30% tariffs imposed by President Trump on Chinese imports, it’s important to note that Microsoft’s gaming revenue was 23.5 billion dollars in 2025, a notable increase from the previous year’s 21.5 billion.

When it comes to where this dev kit cost falls with other consoles, PS5 dev kit costs are not public, though the company does offer some kits free of charge through its PlayStation partners program. Dev kits for the Nintendo Switch 2 have been oddly scarce, but those for the original Switch reportedly cost about $440. It could be argued that the Xbox Series X is a more complex piece of hardware that justifies a higher price point, but $2,000 still feels a bit steep for a multi-billion-dollar company.

It’s not all bad news for developers, though. While Xbox dev kits are rising in price, the ID@Xbox program will still provide independent developers with two free dev kits. Though that may be set to change in the future, it does mean that — at least for now — this new Xbox dev kit price hike hopefully won’t have too much of a negative impact on indie studios with smaller budgets.
