It’s no secret that, besides creating groundbreaking games, watching countless movies, welcoming guests to Kojima Productions, and befriending half of Hollywood, Hideo Kojima somehow still finds time to read the news and share his thoughts online.
And that’s exactly what just happened. Over the past few days, reports about a Matrix video game that almost got made under Kojima’s direction have popped up in the gaming media – and, of course, he saw all of it. So, naturally, the legendary creator couldn’t resist jumping in to tell his side of the story.
Kojima Finally Gives His Take On The Long-Rumored Matrix Game That Never Came To Life
Hideo Kojima shared his thoughts in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), saying that he was actually surprised that he almost created a Matrix game – since it seems that even he was not aware of the complete story.
“I was surprised to see on social media that the Wachowski sisters had ‘offered me a Matrix game project!’ back in 1999”, Kojima wrote. “In all these 26 years, no one ever told me such a conversation had taken place”.
He went on to say that he remembers some exchanged emails with Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski, directors of The Matrix saga, since they were mutual friends. A few months after that, they personally met when the sisters went to Japan to promote their movies, but no talk about a game happened with him.
“I believe I met [the Wachowski sisters] three times. In the morning, we had a Famitsu interview in Shinjuku – that time, Geof Darrow joined us for the talk session”, Kojima recalls. “In the afternoon, they were invited to the headquarters of KONAMI’s CS Division. […] When I arrived at the headquarters, their meeting with Mr. Kitaue, the head of the CS Division, had just ended. I joined them afterward, and we chatted for about an hour without an interpreter (Aki wasn’t even there). I think John Gaeta, the visual effects supervisor, was also present. That evening, I attended the premiere screening and party, where I also met Joel Silver. Even then, there was no mention of an offer”.
Interestingly, Kojima’s version of events actually aligns with recent reports about why a Matrix game under his direction never came to life. According to those reports, the project was scrapped before even reaching pre-production by Kasumi Kitaue, one of Konami’s top executives at the time, due to the ongoing development of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty – which matches what Kojima shared at the very end of his post on X.
“At that time, I was already extremely busy with MGS2 and probably couldn’t have accepted the offer right away. But if someone had told me, maybe there could’ve been a way to make it work,” he completes.
