Last Saturday night, one of the wildest wrestling shows took place in Los Angeles, but it wasn’t at the Ukrainian Cultural Center or Intuit Dome. Improv/comedy theatre UCB Franklin was home for The Midnight Rumble, which delivered three explosive matches. For longtime UCB fans, seeing professional wrestling back at the theatre was an absolute treat.
Ahsohn Williams held it down in more than one way during the event. While Williams got the crowd amped up as the ring announcer, they were also the referee. Watching them have to remove and put on their jacket depending on their role was quite hysterical. Nnamdi Ngwe and Dhruv Uday Singh were also huge factors in the show as the commentators.
The opening bout of the event was an open challenge from RFK Jr. The cocky wrestler found themselves going one-on-one with a bottle of aspirin. While RFK Jr. was dominant in the early going, the bottle of Tylenol bounced back with some snazzy moves of their own. Things changed as Anthony Fauci made a run-in to inject RFK Jr. with the Covid vaccine causing them to pass out and aid Tylenol with the victory.
While the main event was the big draw, the 30-character battle royal delivered an exciting display of comedic wrestling only found at an improv theatre such as UCB. Some of the characters featured in the match were absolutely wild, such as an angry person coming out of Trader Joe’s, the AMC A-Lister, and Mr. Piss, who spat urine at his opponents ala Tajiri. The Mr. Piss character quickly became a fan favorite during the match; if a championship is introduced in the future, it would be a great idea to throw it on the beloved character. Williams also managed to get into the match as an entry, but they were quickly eliminated.
As expected, some WWE characters were featured in this brawl in a different form. The Underbaker slowly walked to the ring with some free cookies for the audience. During the match, the character would use the cookie sheet as an impressive weapon against opponents. While Hulk Hogan passed away over the summer, the wrestler still made an appearance as Weekend at Bernie’s Hulk Hogan. With the aid of two friends, the Hulkster was able to compete despite being dead. At one point in the match, Hogan managed to deliver his signature leg drop with their friends simply lifting his leg on the opponent.
While many opponents were normally tossed out of the match, some exited the ring in a humorous fashion. After learning they only had a few hours to live, Mr. Piss left the match to be with his family. Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift accidentally eliminated themselves while doing yoga with the yoga instructor. Some characters left after learning they got a car ticket. In the end, the grandma, who slept in a chair for most of the match, hopped in the ring and quickly eliminated two opponents to become the winner.
Spawning from a fit of jealousy, Jacquis Neal vs PJ McCormick in an I Quit match was the main event for the evening. This explosive match had one life-changing twist: If Neal lost, he would leave Dropout forever. If McCormick were defeated, he would leave Harold Night. Armed with the same kendo stick used to blindside their opponent at a previous UCB Franklin event, McCormick was ready to continue the beatdown. As Neal and McCormick stared each other down, the theatre was ready to witness an absolute brawl.
Before doing improv in Los Angeles, McCormick was a professional wrestler known as Johnny Ender. Alongside his tag team partner Chris Chronic, McCormick became one-half of the inaugural River City Wrestling Tag Team Champions with an impressive title reign of 118 days. While McCormick left the wrestling business behind, his in-ring work at The Midnight Rumble showed that he can still move today. Neal previously wrestled on a Comedians of Wrestling show at UCB Franklin, so this wasn’t their first time throwing down. While they were inexperienced next to McCormick, Neal’s desire propelled them to deliver the kind of performance one would see from a veteran in the squared circle.
The climax of the match involved one of the most dangerous objects used in: thumbtacks. McCormick unloaded a bag of thumbtacks on the floor with a diabolical plan in mind. As he tried to drop Neal on the dangerous mat, Neal surprised his opponent with a swift reversal. As McCormick lay helpless on the thumbtacks, Neal knew he had to go even more extreme to secure his career. Neal shoved a handful of thumbtacks in McCormick’s mouth before revving up the kendo stick for the final blow. To save himself from a devastating hit, McCormick yelled the words “I quit” giving Neal the victory.
Following the success of Saturday’s sold-out show, The Midnight Rumble will return for more comedic wrestling action at UCB Franklin. Follow The Midnight Rumble on Instagram for updates on future shows.
