Amazon is preparing a major shakeup for its gaming division. Bloomberg reports that the American giant has decided to cut spending and cut thousands of job in its subsidiary.
More than 14,000 employees are expected to be let go in the coming days. The studios based in San Diego and Irvine, responsible for New World and the upcoming The Lord of the Rings game, have both been heavily impacted.
This is what Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch, and games at Amazon, had to say on the matter.
“While we’re proud of our successes in first-party AAA game development and publishing, we have made the difficult decision to halt a significant amount of our first-party AAA game development work – specifically around MMOs – within Amazon Game Studios, including making significant role reductions in our studios in Irvine and San Diego, as well as our central publishing team.”
What’s more, Amazon Games will no longer develop any MMOs in the future.
