8 Best Pokémon ROM Hacks With Extensive Post-Game Content

8 Best Pokémon ROM Hacks With Extensive Post-Game Content
8 Best Pokémon ROM Hacks With Extensive Post-Game Content

The best Pokemon games of all time have always had a pretty incredible post-game experience. I mean, Pokemon Emerald had the Battle Frontier, Pokémon Platinum had a whole new island (and a new battle frontier too), and the Johto titles had another region!

There’s always something that feels a little empty about many new Pokémon titles. I mean, you do the usual Elite 4, with your Pokémon ending up around level 50-60, and then perhaps do a couple of missions or a hidden battle, complete the dex if you’re really desperate, and then… nothing. I, for one, am looking for battles that really test my mettle.

So let’s take a look at some fan-created titles that will truly scratch that itch. Here’s how it should be done! Game Freak, take notes.

This list contains a mix of rom-hacks and fan-games.

8 Pokémon Light Platinum

This one is pretty nostalgic for me. Light Platinum was the first rom-hack I ever played, and while it might be showing its age now, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t excellent back in the day.

Now, Pokémon Light Platinum probably isn’t going to blow you away if you’ve already played some decent rom hacks before, as the story is fairly paint-by-numbers. But for the time it was produced in, it’s actually very well made.

You have 2 whole new regions to explore here, with new events and pretty stunning areas. And yes, this means 16 gyms and 2 Elite 4s! That’s a lot of battling!

What’s more, if you’ve defeated the main game, you can enter the Pokémon World Tournament, which sees you going up against some of the previous Champions from other games for some intense fights. And the final battle? Well, I won’t spoil it for you.

7 Pokémon Elite Redux

Elite Battling Potential

Looking for something completely different? Well, let me introduce Pokémon Elite Redux. While this is a pretty challenging game, that certainly isn’t its only selling point.

This experience is all about flexibility and quality of life options. Hate grinding? Say hello to the candy box. Want to skip the Ev process? Set them automatically! How about variety? Well, here we even have custom Mega Pokémon! If everything is overpowered… then nothing is right?

The postgame here mainly revolves around battling strong trainers scattered around the world, but boy, are these fights going to test you. You can build your teams quickly and efficiently for the fights that loom in the distance, while travelling around catching legendaries to add to your roster.

And what’s more, this game is still being updated with new mechanics, new Pokémon and never-before-seen content. So there’s never been a better time to check it out.

6 Pokémon Infinity

Mons in the Multiverse

Pokémon Infinity is a criminally underrated game that hasn’t been covered all that much. You start this adventure in the Egho region, having woken up in the middle of nowhere. Classic amnesia!

What follows is an extremely creative yet bizarre journey that sees you collect brand-new Pokémon, deal with legendaries, and face the lord of the multiverse itself! Expect plenty of twists and turns, because in this game, nothing is as it seems.

Now, in terms of post-game content, there’s a lot to choose from! Not only has the level cap been raised from 100 to a whopping 150, but you also have a bunch of multiversal missions to choose from, ranging from collecting new starters to capturing God itself to battling Digimon, of all things!

The new designs here are pretty incredible, even if they are rather wacky. It’s a wild ride this one, but one that really sets itself apart from the rest.

5 Pokémon Prism

The New and the Nostalgic

If you still think that the original few generations of Pokémon were the best, well, look no further than Pokémon Prism. Prism boasts a wonderful art style that builds upon the original crystal palette and expands it even further.

Not only does this game massively expand your customisation options, but it also offers 20 gym badges, bonus minigames and even the brand-new ability to play as your Pokémon!

And if you’re still itching to play after the first 8 badges, well, you can actually visit a massive number of regions, both new and familiar. Naljo and Rijon are both fully realised, yet you can also explore Johto, Kanto and another region that we’ll talk a little bit more about later on in this list!

The sheer scope of this game and all the content you can’t find anywhere else truly makes it worth a deep dive!

4 Pokémon Radical Red

Let’s Crank it up a Gear!

Fancy a challenge? Well, even the most proficient of Pokémon battlers, well-versed in the use of EVs, IVs, Destiny Knots, and the like, might have a little trouble with this one.

While Radical Red does take place in Kanto, it offers quite a few things not seen in the original games. This is, of course, a difficulty hack, offering majorly improved boss AI, tougher teams, and a ridiculously diverse roster of Pokémon.

Yet, even if you manage to suffer through the Elite 4, you still have a pretty sizable postgame to enjoy. Like the originals, this will take you through the Sevii Islands, forcing you to fight new rivals and gym leaders, even those from other regions. And of course, these guys aren’t going to go down without a fight!

In addition, a bunch of legendaries can be found roaming around the region or fixed in place. If you need a good power boost, then look no further. While the story here isn’t exactly going to blow you away, the fights will more than make up for it.

3 Pokémon Glazed

When Worlds Collide

Pokémon Glazed is another hack that’s been around for what seems like forever. This game takes place in the Tunod region and sees you fighting to keep the real world from colliding with the world of Pokémon.

Once you complete the main story, you can travel to a new, updated version of Johto and experience something completely different. If you’re used to playing Gold and Silver over and over again, this will throw you for a loop. You experience everything in a totally different order with new characters and trainers to battle.

And if you thought that wasn’t enough, you can even travel to the Rankor islands, where the story continues! If you see yourself as a bit of an explorer, loving to see new lands and traveling the world, this one is for you!

2 Pokémon Unbound

The Cream of the Crop

Creator

Where would we be without Pokémon Unbound? I’m sure you’ve all heard enough of it to last a lifetime. But there’s a good reason. I mean, if we’re talking about polish, then this is another beast entirely.

For unbound, it’s about the experience, the story, the difficulty options, the endless ways to play, the environmental storytelling, and the quest system. I could go on. But even at the very end, after conquering the League, there’s still so much to do.

You can complete a postgame quest with Aklove, complete all the missions, find every mega stone and Z crystal, find all the Zygarde cells, catch all the legendaries, enter the Battle Frontier or even try your hand at New Game +. It’s pretty dizzying, but that’s what makes this one of the best rom-hacks of all time!

1 Pokémon Reborn

Taking Pokémon to the Next Level

Creator

Ah, Pokémon Reborn. Love it or hate it, you just can’t deny that it has some of the best Pokémon gameplay of any rom-hack or fan-game out there.

Whether that’s a gripping (yet edgy) story, a stellar soundtrack, great boss battles and the inclusion of one of the coolest gimmicks ever, the 37 amazing Field Effects, this game truly has something for every type of fan.

But the postgame here goes that little bit further. Here, everything after the main story is separated into tiers. These tiers include a level cap alongside the story events and battles that happen within. Once you complete the events within a tier, you can progress and unlock the next stage.

Every legendary that you encounter has a story event tied to it, so they don’t seem like utterly random encounters thrown in at the last minute. And yet, it isn’t unnecessarily difficult, like some might have found with Radical Red.

Of course, we have the Nightclub that allows you to access certain battle facilities and the like, but one of the most amazing things that stuck out to me during my playthrough was the fact that you can easily play this game over and over again and still not see everything.

This is because Reborn has multiple endings. Choices that you make within the story will change the outcome, so if you want to experience everything that this game has to offer, then get ready to dive in all over again.
