All Scroll Locations in Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake

Dragon Quest I&II HD-2D Remake introduced the scrolls mechanic, items that permanently teach new abilities and spells to our hero. It’s a fantastic feature that enriches the battles of our lone hero.

These scrolls compensate for the lack of certain archetypes or classes in the party, allowing the hero to learn abilities typically restricted to Thieves. For example, Nose for Treasure and Snoop are among my favorites.

The purpose of this guide is to show you the location of every scroll in Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake. I wrote it as I progressed through the game, so feel free to use it as a walkthrough from the moment you venture forth.

Most veterans will recognize the scrolls at a glance, knowing their effect by heart. However, if you’re new to Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake, you won’t know what they do until you find them.

Below, I’ll list all abilities and spells learned via a scroll and their effects so you can decide for yourself if the hunt for them is worth it.

Safe Passage

Galenholm

To the southwest of Galenholm, there’s a single house that isn’t an establishment.

Enter it and check the bookshelf to get your first scroll. Safe Passage will come in handy shortly.

Sandstorm

Erdrick’s Hollow – B1

In the center of the map, there’s a chest housing the Sandstorm scroll.

Crack

Shrine of Rain – 1F

Upon reaching the Shrine of Rain, climb the central stairs, take the east corridor, and go all the way southeast to find a chest with the Crack scroll.

Muster Strength

Craggy Cave – B2

While exploring Craggy Cave, take the stairs in the northwestern area to go down one floor and find a lonely chest with this scroll.

Nose for Treasure

Craggy Cave – B1

Go to the topmost eastern room to find a chest with one of the scrolls responsible for helping me write these guides, the Nose for Treasure ability.

You’ll get the Thief’s Key shortly, allowing you to open red chests.

Whistle

Grave of Galen – B1

Now that we have the Thief’s Key in hand, let’s backtrack a bit. Go to Galenholm, enter the big building with a red door, and head all the way back to descend into the Grave of Galen.

Inside the grave, go to the northeastern room to find three chests. One of those contains the Whistle scroll. For now, you can only explore the first floor.

Magic Barrier

Rimuldar

Upon reaching Rimuldar, you’ll have to circle around the village to enter the Doorlocks maestro’s house.

Once a cutscene plays out, return inside the house and open the chest for this scroll.

Miracle Slash

Cave of the Dwarves – B1

First, go down the northeastern stairs after passing the red door. Then, on B2, go up the northernmost stairs to return to B1 in a secluded room.

The chest there contains the Miracle Slash scroll.

Undead Undoer

Cave of the Dwarves – B2

Keep progressing through the Cave of the Dwarves until you reach the northern room on B2, which leads to the entrance to B3.

There’s a chest beside the southern entrance of this area.

Crackle / Snub

Faerie Village

The game will ask you to stay the night in the western house in Faerie Village.

Before doing so, search one of the chests to find the Crackle scroll and then the rightmost bookshelf to get the Snuff scroll.

Damdara

After heading south from Faerie Village, you’ll reach a desert. In its northeast is the town of Damdara. Just be cautious, because enemies there are nastier than usual.

From the world map, enter the town from the right side. That way, you’ll be closer to the only accessible building. Inside the building, search the barrel for the Demon Demeanor scroll.

Return to the world map and this time, enter Damdara from the left. North of the poison puddle lies a metal shield. Search it for the Padfoot skill, the best ability for those who hate random encounters.

Reheal / Wild Side

Citadel of the Monarch of Medals

The Citadel is found a bit southeast of the Field of Flowers. You can find the Reheal scroll inside the red chest on the left platform.

The Wild Side scroll is a reward for delivering 10 Mini Medals to the Monarch, which you should have by now if you’ve been actively hunting for them.

If you need help finding them, check out our guide on where to find every Mini Medal in Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake.

Focus Pocus

Weirdwood

At first, you’ll only be able to explore the first area of Weirdwood. After some story events, you must return to the woods, now with the second area unlocked.

Once further inside, go straight north to find a chest with the Focus Pocus scroll.

Attack Attacker / Moreheal

Cantlin

Upon reaching Cantlin, go to the western house in the middle of the village and head upstairs.

The Attack Attacker scroll can be found inside a closet, and the Moreheal scroll in one of the bookshelves.

Kacrack

Weeping Isle – Exterior

As you proceed through the annoying Weeping Isle, you’ll exit to the exterior twice. In the last section, you’ll have two paths: one entrance to the left, close to where you just came in, and another after a set of stairs.

Take the closest entry to the left, go through the inner corridor, and when you exit, you’ll be back outside. Keep going to find several pots and barrels, as well as two chests. The red one contains the Kacrack scroll.

You’ll get the Ultimate Key shortly, allowing you to open dark green chests.

Snoop

Tantegel Castle – 1F

After Weeping Isle, you’ll go through a sequence of events until you finally obtain the Ultimate Key, meaning we can backtrack to several places in search of scrolls.

One of the most useful ones (which will make this guide somewhat redundant) is the Snoop scroll, located in Tantegel Castle behind a locked door.

Kacrackle Slash

Grave of Galen – B3

As you progress through the story, you’ll need to delve deeper into the Grave of Galen. Upon reaching B2, go down the second set of stairs to the west.

Then, keep going west until you find a room with a chest holding this scroll.

Meditation

Citadel of the Monarch of Medals

Whenever you get a total of 35 Mini Medals, you can return to the Medal Monarch and get a Meditation scroll as a reward.

And you should, because Meditation is the best healing ability in the game, meaning you can not only heal 500 HP in a single action, but also avoid spells-dampening enemies.

This is the last scroll you can find in Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake. Once you learn every spell and ability by leveling up, you’ll earn the A Man of Many Talents achievement/trophy.
