10 Forgotten PlayStation Classics That Deserve a PS5 Remake

10 Forgotten PlayStation Classics That Deserve a PS5 Remake

The library for the PlayStation 1 continues to be one of the most impressive software line-ups I’ve ever seen. Even over three decades later, it is still one of my favorite consoles of all time.

That said, it’s easy to point out the huge games that everyone knows and loves. Titans like Final Fantasy 7 and Metal Gear Solid are what they are. Timeless classics.

Beyond that, however, you can find an entire catalog of PS1 games that have been forgotten. These games were also crucial to PS1’s massive success.

Because when they said the PS1 had something for everyone, they truly meant it.

Video game remakes are more popular now than ever, and these games would benefit greatly from a PS5 remake. With the help of some incredibly powerful hardware and a talented team, these forgotten PS1 games could rise from the grave and become something truly special.

10 Galerians

Resident Evil With Psychics

Galerians may be the most overlooked hidden gem that got a sequel of all time. The PS2 follow-up was also fantastic, but the original is one of the PS1’s most compelling experiences.

As with most PS1-era survival horror games, Galerians uses fixed cameras and 2D pre-rendered backgrounds. The recent Resident Evil remakes have shown just how incredible a game like that can be when given a complete overhaul.

The coolest part about Galerians is how it uses psychic powers and abilities for its combat. It’s so unlike any other survival horror game of the era, and the use of psychic moves could really be fun to see done with today’s technology.

It also has some incredible CG cutscenes, which are still fantastic to look at. The hype was always around Final Fantasy during this time for cutting-edge CG sequences, but Galerians was doing some mighty impressive stuff as well.

9 Apocalypse

A Star-Studded Affair

These days, cinematic action games with well-known Hollywood stars lending their likeness to the lead character aren’t that surprising. It was a bit of a unique concept back in 1997 with Apocalypse, though.

Starring the legendary Bruce Willis, Apocalypse found itself scaled down quite a bit during development. Bruce Willis’ role diminished as development progressed, however, leaving the finished game as being fun but perhaps missing the golden opportunity it had.

Today, you could easily find one of the industry’s top action stars, say someone like Idris Elba, and see what this game could really become. The world of Apocalypse is dazzling, and it would be amazing to see it brought to life with current-day tech.

Not only that, but big budget twin-stick shooters are a bit of a rarity these days. It’s long overdue for a resurgence.

8 Shipwreckers!

Land Ahoy

Shipwreckers was known as Overboard in other regions, but no matter what name you call it by, it’s one of the PS1’s most overlooked hidden gems.

Set in a land that looks like a Disney cartoon turned into 3D, Shipwreckers is a cute little action game that puts you in control of a pirate ship. Your goal is to conquer each harbor, and each one offers unique challenges and power-ups along the way.

It’s a simple concept, but the animation of the ship and the way it feels to move is excellent. The progression of difficulty and challenge is perfect.

Many of you probably played the demo way back in the day, but the full game is outstanding. It would be a perfect fit for a PS5 update.

7 Mizzurna Falls

Small Town Weirdness

The 1990s were absolutely obsessed with conspiracy theories and small town mysteries. That obsession also translated into video games, where Mizzurna Falls perfected that off-beat, surreal vision of small town America better than perhaps any other game to date.

Set amongst the backdrop of a murder mystery and a town with sinister secrets, it is a game that is so unlike any other even today. Perhaps the closest you can get today is Alan Wake, but Mizzurna Falls is just as good in many ways, if not better.

It’s also an open-world game, which was something Alan Wake tried before it had to be restarted.

Mizzurna Falls would be an absolute no-brainer for a PS5 remake. If games like Deadly Premonition or Night in the Woods have proven anything, it’s that off-kilter games like Mizzurna Falls would still have an audience today.

6 Heart Of Darkness

It’s Past Time To Bring Back Cinematic Platformers

I grew up playing quite a few cinematic platformers. Another World and Flashback are all-time favorites, but these days, the cinematic platformer is not what it once was.

Which is why now is the perfect time to revisit Heart of Darkness, an absolutely delightful cinematic platformer that stars a young boy named Andy attempting to save his dog from shadow monsters.

It features some of the most stylish, impeccably detailed animation I’ve ever seen. The music is also a highlight, as it was composed by the stupendous Bruce Broughton.

It has all the energy and charm of a ’90s-era children’s adventure film, and in an era where that type of storytelling is coming back into fruition, now is the time to strike.

5 Bishi Bashi Special

Ruining Friendships In 4K

Developer

Konami

Release Date

1998, JP Only

Platforms

PS1

Sony has explored nearly every genre you can think of. They’ve got their roster of shooters, RPGs, cinematic action games; nearly every genre covered.

Except for one.

The party genre is one that Sony has dabbled with, but they’re lacking one to slot into their ongoing rotation. Bishi Bashi Special would be a great place to start.

This madcap mini-game bonanza is bursting with its own fantastic style. Only one has ever been released outside of Japan, which was Bishi Bashi Special, though it only came to Europe.

Reviving this PS1 classic for modern hardware would be such a slam dunk. Just imagine the utter chaos it would create among friend groups.

4 Silent Bomber

A Unique Top-Down Action Game

Chaotic top-down shooters were pretty common on the PS1, but Silent Bomber had a pretty unique hook to it.

Instead of rattling off countless bullets, Silent Bomber focuses on what it says on the tin. You don’t use guns, but instead are an expert in bombs and explosives.

It is a kinetic, high-octane action game that is still fun to play even all these years later. The upgrade and progression systems are also excellent.

Silent Bomber is the type of game that would absolutely dominate as a small and focused, budget-conscious remake for the PS5.

The game’s original developers, CyberConnect, are currently still around. So, now would be the time to call them up and see what happens.

3 I.Q.: Intelligent Qube

Perfect!

Puzzle games may be the most consistent genre of all time. They tend to stay popular throughout each generation, as they find new audiences rather quickly.

I.Q.: Intelligent Qube is easily my favorite puzzle game of all time. It not only holds up today, but I would confidently put it alongside contemporary hits like Baba Is You and The Witness.

It is like any good puzzle game in that its simplicity is actually its greatest strength. The core concept is fairly easy to grasp, requiring you to mark a spot on the floor as the cubes come toward you.

But as you progress, you’ll need to keep colors in mind, as green and black cubes have different properties. It is the type of game that would be a surefire streamer and YouTube Let’s Play hit today.

2 Valkyrie Profile

Take Me To Valhalla

The Valkyrie series actually got a new entry back in 2018, but it almost feels like people don’t even know that the older games exist. All they know is that Valkyrie Elysium was pretty bland.

Which is a shame, because Valkyrie Profile is still one of the most incredible and brilliantly well-made RPGs I’ve ever played.

The way it uses Norse mythology to build its world is fabulous. Games during this era were often limited by the hardware, but Valkyrie Profile could pass as a current-day AAA JRPG.

The scale is mind-blowing, as flying around the beautiful world map is such an amazing feeling. There is absolutely no reason to not remake this game today, as it would easily become an instant modern classic.

1 Future Cop: LAPD

Stay Out Of Trouble

Growing up during the 1990s, one of my keen obsessions was the RoboCop film series. As a result, I often searched for games about robots set in dystopian worlds.

As oddly specific as that may sound, I actually found one in the form of Future Cop: LAPD.

Future Cop was originally conceived as part of the ongoing Strike series, which had one thing and one thing only in mind:

Complete and utter destruction.

Backed by a pulsing, electronic soundtrack and some charming background voice chatter, Future Cop: LAPD is one of the most insanely fun PS1 games you can find today.

It is fertile ground for a remake on PS5. It would slot right into Sony’s library of games flawlessly, and seeing this harsh, sci-fi world brought to life with modern hardware would be a treat.
