Fallout Creator Reveals Hilarious Response From D&D Creators

The creator of Fallout has revealed the hilarious response he received from the creators of Dungeons & Dragons as a teenager, when he sent them a list of questions about the game’s rules.

While the current Dungeons & Dragons rules are incredibly user-friendly and cover pretty much any question the players may have, the previous editions weren’t so clear, especially the early ones. It was common for the old Dungeons & Dragons books to be full of errors, contradictions, or references to terms that were never explained.

One person with questions was a young Tim Cain, who would go on to create Fallout and even make a Dungeons & Dragons title when he moved to Troika Games, being part of the team that made The Temple of Elemental Evil PC game. In a new video on the Timothy Cain YouTube channel, he reads a letter he wrote with his friends to the creators of D&D, full of rule questions.

To clarify, the edition being discussed is Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, also known as the second edition, which was the ruleset used in the old Baldur’s Gate games.

Cain and his friends sent thirty questions about the Dungeons & Dragons rules, including specifics about saying undead with a vorpal sword, what happens when a class’ prime requisite stat is lowered, and the limitations of a Leprechaun’s polymorph magic abilities.

Despite all their work, the response they received consisted of two words – “DM’s discretion.” For the non-Dungeons & Dragons players, that basically translates to “You make up the answer.”

Thankfully, the creators of D&D are a lot easier to reach nowadays, with many of them responding to rules questions on social media. Back in the old days, the best fans could hope for was an answer that was no answer at all.
