A lot of people play games for escapism, but sometimes, there’s value in staring the darkness in the eye. As the war between Russia and Ukraine rages on, Offworld Industries has announced the release date for one of its most requested features: the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
According to the official Squad social media page, the AFU will join Squad with update 10.0, scheduled to release this Tuesday, November 12th. The version number has a nice symbolic message with it, as this year also marks the game’s 10th anniversary.
The Ukraine update is the latest in a series of moves to try and make the game more realistic. Earlier this year, the fictional Middle Eastern Alliance faction was reworked to better represent the Islamic Republic of Iran Army, and OWI has announced plans to bring the French Army to Squad in the future.
Ukrainian Equipment in Squad
According to the developers, the Ukrainian army is being modelled in a pre-2022 capacity to better match the timeframe of the other factions in the game. The result is primarily a mix of modernized Soviet gear and domestically produced equipment, with a few Western additions here and there.
The standard service rifles of Ukraine in Squad are the AK-74, AKS-74, and the Malyuk. Fire support classes get the RPK, RPK-74, RPD, and PKM machine guns, the SVD, and the UAR-10 marksman rifles.
You’ll find some more variation in the vehicle ranks. Logistics and transport are provided by the KrAZ-6322, which is also the chassis for Ukraine’s BM-22 rocket artillery system in the game. Light armored transport falls to the Kozak 2M1, a domestically-produced armored car that will have machine gun and automatic grenade launcher turret options.
On top of the standard BMP-1 and BMP-2, Ukraine will have access to the BMP-1TS upgrade, which replaces the 2A28 Grom and Malyutka combo with a 30mm autocannon, a 30mm grenade launcher, and the RK-2M-K Skif anti-tank missile. For those of wheeled disposition, you’ll get to play with the BTR-4, a domestic armored car with a 30mm gun and Skif AT missiles.
However, the crown jewel of Ukraine’s armor is the T-64BM2 Bulat. This is a domestic modernization of the Soviet T-64B produced in Kharkiv, Ukraine. The 125mm cannon is paired with a modern fire control system that allows it to contend against other modern tanks in Squad.
