8 Best Soulslikes with Difficulty Options

The Soulslike genre is known for its brutal difficulty and the feeling of overcoming a challenge that once seemed impossible. It’s also known for its deep RPG mechanics, leveling up, and in-depth character build systems that make these games hard to put down. However, some gamers are turned off by the difficulty, but may still want to enjoy the other aspects of the genre.

Most Soulslikes don’t offer difficulty settings, which is a shame for a lot of players. However, there are some Soulslikes out there that go against this rule and provide sliders and settings for the player to customize the experience to their liking. This allows casual gamers to enjoy the mechanics and story of the Soulslike genre without getting overly frustrated and exhausted.

If you’re someone who is interested in the genre but is put off by the challenge, we have a great list for you here. We will discuss the eight best Soulslike games that offer difficulty options, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the world and story, while not removing the fun that the genre is known for.

8 Enotria: The Last Song

Have a Relaxing Time in This Italian Setting

Enotria: The Last Song was met with mixed reviews when it was released, but people don’t give it enough credit. It has some solid fundamentals, and the difficulty to match that makes it a Soulslike worth checking out. However, if you’re simply just interested in the Italian folklore world and story, you can rest assured that the game does include difficulty options.

The easiest difficulty, called Story Mode, is available to players at the start of the game and can even be switched to during a playthrough. Considering the game has a good amount of jank, which can be infuriating on its normal difficulty, the story mode makes the overall experience more enjoyable. It allowed me to look past all of the game’s negatives, as I didn’t encounter as much unfair nonsense that is present in normal mode.

7 Steelrising

Customize Your Journey

Steelrising is an underappreciated gem in the Soulslike genre, and I can kind of see why that’s the case. There is a ton of jank, encounters that feels off, and undercooked mechanics, but overall, it’s an enjoyable time and a game I’d recommend to most. I’d especially recommend it to casual gamers looking to get into Soulslikes, simply because it’s on the easier side, while still providing the challenge you’d come to expect from the genre.

Even better, if the default difficulty is too much for you, the game has a great tool to fix that. Steelrising has an “Assist Mode” which allows players to customize their experience to their liking. Players can adjust the amount of damage taken, endurance regeneration, XP loss on death, and more. It’s extremely accessible and opens the doors for all players of any skill level.

6 Another Crab’s Treasure

Focus On the Story

Another Crab’s Treasure takes a different approach to Soulslikes, a genre that is usually darker, and takes a cartoony look to its graphics. Don’t let the cartoon style fool you, though; this game can be brutal, especially against some of the mid-to-endgame bosses. Fortunately, there are difficulty sliders that can make the game trivial to the point where you don’t have to put much effort in.

The difficulty sliders are great for players who like the style of the game but aren’t a huge fan of Soulslikes. Even better, it gives players the opportunity to play a fantastic game that has an interesting story, good voice acting, and a great combat system. The difficulty sliders turn the game from a challenging one that demands constant focus to a cozy experience that you can just kick back and enjoy.

5 Remnant 2

Make This Shooter Trivial

Remnant 2 has not one, not two, not three, but four difficulty options available for players. With four difficulty modes to choose from, Remnant 2 is perfect for any type of gamer. If you’re looking for an easy experience, where the enemies do barely any damage and aren’t aggressive, then go right ahead and choose Survivor. Or if you’re looking for your biggest challenge yet, then Apocalypse mode is for you.

Not only is Remnant 2 extremely accessible with its difficulty, it’s also an incredible game that takes the Soulslike formula and puts it into a third-person shooter. There are tons of secrets to discover, an interesting story to unravel, and it’s an absolute blast to play with a group of friends. However, if you do play with friends, then you’ll all have to agree on a difficulty.

4 The First Berserker: Khazan

It’s Possible To Make This Soulslike Less Brutal

The First Berserker: Khazan is a brutal Soulslike with some of the hardest bosses in the entire genre. Some bosses are so challenging that the average player will die upward of 20 times before coming away successful. However, the game includes difficulty options for players who are looking for an easier experience. Still, even on the easiest difficulty, The First Berserker: Khazan is still tough.

The one thing that is frustrating with The First Berserker: Khazan is the constant enemies you have to fight between boss fights. Being able to change the difficulty to a lower setting allows these sections to feel less like a chore, making the overall experience more enjoyable. Additionally, if you’re having trouble against a boss and you have just had enough, you can lower the difficulty to increase your chances.

3 Nine Sols

An Easier Challenge

Nine Sols is clearly inspired by Hollow Knight and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and its standard difficulty is right up there with those two games. Fortunately, unlike the two games mentioned, Nine Sols has two difficulties for players to choose from: Standard and Story mode. Standard is how the game is intended to be played, with each enemy hitting like a truck and brutal bosses, but the story mode is much more forgiving.

In story mode, players should expect to take less damage from oncoming attacks and deal higher damage with each successful strike. Keep in mind, however, that even though the mode is called “story,” you will still be required to stay on your toes and try during each enemy encounter and boss fight. It’s no cakewalk, it’s just significantly easier than the default difficulty.

2 Stellar Blade

Made for Everyone in Mind

Stellar Blade may not be considered a Soulslike to some people, but it shares a ton of elements of the genre that make it feel like one. Enemies have very distinct and calculated attacks, it’s parry and dodge-focused, it’s really challenging, and the level design is reminiscent of others in the genre. In other words, Stellar Blade’s DNA has Soulslike written all over it.

Luckily, the challenge of Stellar Blade can be customized as there are three difficulty options to choose from: Story, Normal, and Hard. This not only allows casual players to enjoy the incredible sci-fi world of the game, but also gives die-hard fans an opportunity to replay the game with a greater challenge and test their skills. Stellar Blade is a fantastic game, and I highly recommend that any player of any skill level give it a try.

1 Lies of P

The Best Soulslike Recently Became Easier

Lies of P was initially released without difficulty sliders, but almost two years later, with the release of its Overture DLC, Neowiz added an “Awakened Puppet” mode. Awakened Puppet makes the entire game easier, making the game more accessible for those who aren’t the best at Soulslikes. This is especially useful in its DLC since it’s significantly harder than the base game.

While Awakened Puppet doesn’t make the game trivial by any means, it’s significantly easier as enemies and bosses deal less damage, while your character deals more damage. The dedicated fanbase was upset about this addition, as they believe that the challenge is what makes this game so great, but I actually thought it was great as it introduced a phenomenal game to a more casual player base.
