It’s just business, eh?

The son of a 9/11 victim has publicly denounced President Trump’s recent meeting with Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), claiming the president deliberately avoided holding the Crown Prince accountable for the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

As reported by The Hill, Brett Eagleson, whose father died during the attacks, spoke out during an interview on Wednesday, expressing extreme disappointment that the meeting failed to advance efforts to secure justice for the nearly 3,000 Americans killed. Eagleson did not mince words about what he believes motivated the president’s actions. He called the meeting “a disgusting display of America’s ability to just whitewash the sins of their past because the Saudis came in with a bunch of money.”

Honestly, that’s a brutal accusation, but it highlights the immense frustration felt by families who have been seeking a resolution for over two decades. While Eagleson noted that a strong relationship with Saudi Arabia is important for global peace, he insisted that this relationship cannot happen without a “reckoning and an accounting of what that country did, and elements within that government did 25 years ago.”

Trump even goes as far as grilling the reporter who questions American ties with MBS

The meeting became even more heated when a reporter attempted to press the president on the issue of accountability. ABC reporter Mary Bruce asked President Trump why American families and 9/11 victims should trust MBS. In response, the president lashed out, telling Bruce she was a “terrible person” and a “terrible reporter.” If you ask me, refusing to answer a critical question about victim justice and instead attacking the journalist is a terrible look. It only reinforces the idea that the administration was trying to shield MBS from scrutiny.

Eagleson has been fighting for justice ever since his father was killed, and he says the evidence against the government of Saudi Arabia is overwhelming. He pointed out that this isn’t just speculation; a federal judge in the Southern District of Manhattan has reviewed “credible evidence” presented by the families. This evidence is strong enough that the judge has said the country “must stand trial for the murder of my father, and nearly 3,000 Americans.”

During the meeting, MBS reportedly interrupted President Trump with a specific defense regarding the attacks. Eagleson believes this was a planned move. “MBS didn’t have to say anything,” Eagleson noted, adding that the Crown Prince “had a precanned answer that he wanted to get out there.” MBS brought up the fact that Osama bin Laden chose 15 of the 19 hijackers to be Saudi Arabian. Eagleson quickly dismissed this talking point. He argues that while the fact itself may be true, “it doesn’t—you can’t disregard the fact that right now a federal judge… has said and reviewed credible evidence” for a trial. The legal evidence is what matters, not historical details designed to deflect blame.

Eagleson is not alone in his condemnation of the meeting. The organization 9/11 Families United also shared similar sentiments, saying that MBS “knows nothing of the pain of the 9/11 families.” However, you should keep in mind that this is not the first time that the current administration has shown insensitivity toward 9/11 victims.
