Last Monday, the gaming universe came to a collective standstill following the tragic news of Vince Zampella’s passing on December 22 due to a car accident.
At just 55 years old, the industry has lost a titan, a developer whose vision created the Call of Duty franchise, founded the studios Infinity Ward and Respawn Entertainment, and was actively leading the rebirth of the Battlefield series.
Zampella was a pioneer who fundamentally altered the landscape of modern FPS, and his influence stretched across decades and genres, leaving an indelible mark on how stories are told and how multiplayer experiences are crafted.
As word of the accident spread, it didn’t take long for tributes and heartfelt messages to begin appearing from every corner of the gaming industry, as developers and studios united to remember his legacy and mourn the tragic news on social media with the gaming community.
Industry Leaders and Studios Honor a Legend
Among the most touching tributes was one from Hideo Kojima, the legendary creator of Metal Gear Solid and current head of Kojima Productions.
Kojima shared a personal story about how Zampella supported him during his own transition to independence, offering precious advice during a difficult time, and also reinforced how he is still very shocked by what happened.

The developer who redefined the modern FPS genre has tragically passed away.
“I heard the tragic news that Vince has passed away. I still can’t believe it,” Kojima wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “When I was preparing to go independent myself, and maybe because he felt we were in similar situations [referring to Zampella’s decision to create the Infinity Ward studio], he took the time to listen to me, offered advice, and supported me in many ways. Even after he moved to DICE, whenever I went to Los Angeles, we would have meals together and talk about our respective futures.”
“I honestly don’t have the words. It’s far too soon. This is heartbreaking,” concluded Kojima in the post.

Ed Boon, the co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise and current creative director at NetherRealms, also took X to echo the sentiment of disbelief regarding the loss of his friend, emphasizing the importance of Zampella’s impact and legacy on the gaming industry.
“Still processing this. Can’t believe we lost another legend in gaming,” Boon lamented. “Don’t know if it’s possible to overstate the impact Vince Zampella has made on games. […] Unbelievable loss. I’ve gotten to know Vince better over the last 10 years and consider him a friend. Always looked forward to catching up with him at game industry events. Very sad news.”
Another developer who paid tribute was John Romero, often hailed as the “father of the FPS” and co-founder of id Software, also acknowledged Zampella’s monumental contributions to the genre they both helped build.
In a post on X, the DOOM and Quake creator stated that Zampella’s “mark on the FPS genre is monumental” and expressed his shock at seeing a fellow legend gone so soon.
Beyond individual tributes, the studios and publishers that Zampella called home released official statements. Electronic Arts was among the first to react, describing his passing as an “unimagined loss” and stating that “Vince’s influence on the video game industry was profound and far-reaching,” noting that his work helped shape modern interactive entertainment.
Treyarch, the studio that worked alongside Zampella’s original team on the Call of Duty franchise for years, also paid their respects to their roots: “We’re deeply saddened by Vince Zampella’s tragic passing. His legacy as one of the founders of Call of Duty and a legend of our industry will never be forgotten.”

Lastly, perhaps the most emotional message came from Respawn Entertainment, the studio Zampella co-founded and led to massive success with Titanfall and Apex Legends.
“We’re heartbroken by the passing of our founder and dear friend,” the studio shared in a post on X. “Vince was a titan and legend, a visionary leader who shaped teams and games like Call of Duty, Titanfall, Apex Legends, the Star Wars Jedi series and Battlefield for our community in ways that will be felt for generations”.
“His impact reached far beyond any one game or studio. We will remember Vince for how he showed up every day, trusting his teams, encouraging bold ideas, and believing in Respawn & Battlefield. Most importantly, he championed what he believed was right for the people behind those studios and our players because it mattered,” reads the post. “We will miss him greatly.”
These tributes serve as a powerful reminder of Zampella’s immense legacy. From independent creators to major corporate partners, the message is clear: the industry has lost a true friend and a visionary who helped shape the games we play today.
