Ubisoft Announced Closure Of Its Recently Unionized Halifax Studio With 71 Jobs Impacted

It may be 2026, but layoffs aren’t stopping anytime soon as Ubisoft has announced it’s closing its Halifax studio, the developer behind the company’s 2018 free-to-play strategy mobile RPG, Assassin’s Creed Rebellion with 71 jobs set to be affected, according to GameIndustry.biz. The news comes not so suspiciously after 61 employees at the Canadian studio officially unionized with Game & Media Workers Guild of Canada on December 18th, 2025, and became the french publisher’s first official North American labour union.

To deny any claims of union busting, the publisher says that it respects any employee’s right to join a union and that the decision to close its Halifax studio was made “well before” the Canadian developer officially unionized. A company spokesperson told GameIndustry.biz that the 2026 studio closure was part of a two-year long ongoing company-wide cost-cutting efforts, before Ubisoft Halifax kicked off the process of unionizing in 2025.

“Over the past 24 months, Ubisoft has undertaken company-wide actions to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and reduce costs. As part of this, Ubisoft has made the difficult decision to close its Halifax studio. 71 positions will be affected. We are committed to supporting all impacted team members during this transition with resources, including comprehensive severance packages and additional career assistance,” Ubisoft wrote in a statement.
