Where to get all Hides in Hytale

Where to get all Hides in Hytale
Where to get all Hides in Hytale

Hytale has a rather advanced crafting system compared to its very simplistic counterpart, Minecraft. Your most powerful items and pieces of armour require not only lots of rare minerals, but scraps of fabric from deadly enemies and leather from vicious wild beasts.

While it does take a fair amount of time to collect these materials and create full sets of a specific metal, the output is rather more satisfying, and you’ll be able to take pride in your new defensive equipment.

Hytale: Where to Get All Ores

It’s time to mine!

So, just how do we obtain the leather needed to create these armaments, and how can we gather it as quickly as possible? Let’s take a look at the Fauna of Hytale, and how to take advantage of this wicked and wild world.

Light Hide – Light Leather

Light leather is used for the most basic of equipment, and, like the other types of leather, can be created by using hides on a Tanning Rack.

Light Hide is pretty easy to come by, as it can be gathered simply by killing most peaceful mobs that spawn around the world. However, the baby versions of these animals won’t drop hides, only the adult variant. Don’t be cruel!

A general rule of thumb is that, if an enemy runs away from you, it will usually drop Light Hide. Anything that tries to attack you will drop better types of hide.

If you spend most of your time in the main Emerald Grove Biome, the best animals to kill are:

  • Cows
  • Horses
  • Sheep
  • Boar
  • Rats (Underground)

However, the other biomes also have creatures that drop light hides too. For example, goats and desert chickens in their respective areas. The biome that you decide to settle in will vary based on your preferred materials and the goals that you have. If you need to travel quickly between areas, consider setting up a couple of teleporters.

Medium Hide – Medium Leather

Now, medium hide can be a little trickier, as the animals that drop this material certainly fight back, and they can be a bit of a pain to deal with if you’re not prepared.

Generally, Tier 2 materials, like Thorium, will use Medium Leather in their recipes. While the main way of gathering this material is still by killing animals, you can find all sorts of leather by looting chests in villages found in different types of biomes.

Don’t bother killing critters like foxes and frogs, as they won’t drop hides.

Look out for the following creatures to get more Medium Hide:

  • Wolves
  • Sabretooth Tigers
  • Hyenas
  • Lava Frogs

Heavy Hide – Heavy Leather

Heavy Hide is where things get serious. The monsters that drop this material can hit like an absolute truck, even if you’re wearing high-tier armour. So you’re going to want a plan if you come face-to-face with one of them.

I like to use the special attack of the daggers, which does a good amount of damage, while pushing you away from the enemy, giving you some distance. I’ll fire off a couple of arrows, and then do another special attack. The further away you engage, the better.

You’re going to need a lot of Heavy Leather if you plan on creating full Adamantite Armour and a set of weapons and tools. The best monsters to kill for Heavy Hide are:

  • Bears
  • Mosshorn
  • Yetis

I found that killing Yetis is the easiest, as they spawn very frequently in the Boreal Mountain biome, while dropping 3-4 Heavy Hides at a time. In addition, they also drop Essences of Ice, which are very important for upgrading your Blacksmithing Anvil later on.

Sturdy Chitin

While this Chitin isn’t technically a Hide, you’ll still need to collect a good amount of it if you plan on upgrading the Tanning Rack and the Armourer’s Workbench.

The easiest way to get Sturdy Chitin is by heading into the Desert Biome. Many of the monsters that populate this area drop the chitin; however, they can be dangerous if unprepared. Not only will these monsters gather in large numbers, but they can often inflict venom, dealing a significant amount of damage over time.

If you have an Alchemist’s Workbench, you can create Antidotes to cure poison and give you temporary immunity.

The best way to combat this is by fighting from a distance with a crossbow or bow, and by bringing plenty of high-healing food or health potions. The best enemies to kill to farm chitin are:

  • Scarab Seekers
  • Scoprions
  • Armadillos
  • Turtles

Storm Hide – Storm Leather

At this moment in time, similarly to Mithril, Storm Leather hasn’t made it into the game just yet. When Mithril arrives, along with the new biomes and worlds that have been teased, this material, along with some new deadly monsters, will likely accompany it.

It is currently unknown whether Storm Leather will be the best leather in the game, or if more types of Hide will eventually be released into the game to best it.

Workstations

Once you’ve collected your hides, you’ll want to create a Tanning Rack. That can be done with:

  • 6x Any Log
  • 3x Any Stone
  • 3x Light Hide

While you don’t need any kind of resources to create the leather, like with a furnace, it takes significantly longer to create the leather in comparison. In this case, it makes sense to create a few Tanning Racks so you can tan all of your hides at the same time. If you’re not in the chunk where the tanning is taking place, the hides won’t be turned into leather, so keep that in mind.

In addition, you can upgrade the Tanning Rack to Tier 2 with the following materials:

  • 5x Light Leather
  • 5x Medium Leather
  • 5x Heavy Leather
  • 5x Sturdy Chitin

The Tier 3 Tanning Rack will have 3 slots instead of 2, allowing you to tan 3 different types of Hide at the same time. Remember that you will need a good amount of every type of leather in order to upgrade your other workstations, like the Workbench and the anvil.
