By the time the credits rolled in Life Is Strange: Double Exposure, there were several big questions left unanswered for Life Is Strange fans, chief being the fate of Chloe Price. A new game, Life is Strange: Reunion, seeks to answer that by reuniting Max and Chloe for one last time-bending adventure.
Announced during a Life Is Strange livestream hosted by publisher Square Enix (after the game leaked via its PEGI rating), Reunion will pick up sometime after Double Exposure and serve as “the thrilling finale to the Max and Chloe saga.”
Here’s Square Enix’s official description of Life is Strange: Reunion:
Chloe Price was Max Caulfield’s partner in time… Losing her is Max’s greatest regret. Now Chloe has come to Caledon University. Haunted by nightmares and impossible memories, Chloe needs Max’s help. But Max is already in crisis: in three days, a deadly inferno will destroy the campus. Max’s Rewind power has bought her time – but she can’t prevent the blaze alone. The fire will force Max and Chloe to make devastating decisions. Can they find a future together… Before everything burns?
And in a series first, Max and Chloe are playable co-leads of the next Life is Strange game. Max still has her Rewind ability, but her time-altering powers have evolved. According to Andrew James, senior brand manager for Life is Strange, Max finds that after leaping into a Polaroid photograph to escape a fire, “that she is able to stay in that past, starting all over again from the point she took a selfie.”
Chloe, on the other hand, can use the power of Backtalk to “browbeat her opponents during key conversations” and explore areas of Caledon University that Max can’t — “she can go where Max can’t, ask what she wouldn’t, and say the things that would never cross Max’s mind,” James says.
The game is set once more at Caledon University, where Max previously spent most of her time trying to save the life of her new-friend-turned-frenemy Safi in Double Exposure. Max returns from a weekend away to find the university has been set ablaze. Distraught at the loss of her friends and loved ones, Max is only able to escape thanks to the return of her time-reversal abilities, jumping back in time three days before the inferno through a picture of a selfie. Not only does she have her powers back, Max has to figure out how to save Caledon.
However, the biggest twist comes from a once-thought-impossible return: Chloe Price ends up on Max’s doorstep. Players of the original Life is Strange and Double Exposure will remember that Square Enix gave players a few choices regarding Chloe, such as whether you were just best friends or lovers, and her survival after the previous entry in the series. If she didn’t survive, Double Exposure left Max wracked with guilt. If she did survive, however, the relationship became strained over the years, and the two separated. Either way, while not physically part of the game, Chloe still played a huge part in Max’s narrative.
Now, before some angry fans get the pitchforks, the reason for Chloe’s return — despite whether you picked Chloe to live or not — does make sense considering the events of Double Exposure. The reveal trailer also confirms this: Chloe is back because of Max’s merging of two different timelines in Double Exposure, something which she did to save Safi’s life.
However, the broader repercussions of Max’s decision hadn’t been revealed… until now. Chloe’s back with memories of a life she did (or didn’t) live, and it’s up to Max to help her.
While Max will have her time-rewinding powers again, Chloe’s no slouch either. Armed with a “Backtalk” ability that lets players show off her take-no-prisoners attitude, Chloe will be able to deal with people and get into locations that Max won’t be able to. It’s the first time that players will be able to take control of Chloe since Deck Nine’s first outing with the franchise in 2017 with Life Is Strange: Before the Storm.
Fans of the Life is Strange franchise know that there have been several spinoffs, such as True Colors and Life Is Strange 2. That’s not counting the comics, graphic novels, and books, so while a conclusion to Max and Chloe this may be, does it mean a goodbye to Life Is Strange as a whole? Considering that Double Exposure was considered a “large loss” for Square Enix, it could be.
Life Is Strange: Reunion will be released on March 26 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X for $39.99.
