It’s been a long time coming for the Fable reboot.
First announced during the Xbox Games Showcase in 2020, the idea of Playground Games, best known for their work on Forza Horizon, tackling the iconic Xbox RPG franchise seemed like a match made in heaven. The first Fable game is an excellent action RPG, even if it fell short of its lofty expectations. Fable 2 is an even better game, but since then, the franchise has floundered.
9 Upcoming Xbox Games We Hope Don’t Get Cancelled
Here’s to hoping that these anticipated Xbox games survive Microsoft’s recent layoffs and cancellations.
While the Fable reboot has appeared sporadically over the years, including its 2024 Xbox Games Showcase trailer featuring Richard Ayoade, there was still a feeling of uncertainty around the game. The decision to delay the game to 2026 last year only added to that uncertainty, especially since 2025 was a year dominated by studio closures and layoffs for Microsoft.
That all changed today during Xbox’s 2026 Developer Direct, where we finally got the chance to take a deep dive into what Fable has in store for us this year, including a release date: Fable will launch in Autumn 2026 for Xbox, PC, and PlayStation.
Fable Is A Fully Open World Experience
Playground Games stressed that they wanted to deliver a faithful Fable experience that pays homage to the original Lionhead games. Having said that, it isn’t much of a surprise that you’ll start the game as a child in a local village, thrust into action when danger strikes, and kick the game’s story off in earnest.
A first for the franchise, Playground confirmed that Fable will be truly open world, promising players they’ll be able to see everything Albion has to offer from the very start.
Playground will be bring back fan favorite enemies, including hobbes, trolls, and more. New enemy types include cockatrices and Playground teases, each of which comes with its own characteristics and traits, requiring players to change their strategy based on who they’re fighting.
8 Underrated Xbox 360 Exclusives
Everyone knows the hits, but how many underrated Xbox 360 exclusives do you remember?
Of course, the biggest legacy Fable has left on players is how you interact not with your enemies, but the world itself, and the impact your actions will have on it. From building relationships with NPCs, buying houses, businesses, having children, and the works. This is all possible through what Playground calls “The Living Population,” which fuels the over 1,000 people that live in Albion.
You can follow them as they go about their day, chat with them, interact with them, and whatever else you see fit. You can have them work for you, be their landlord, evict them, and all of these actions will fuel your reputation. This ties into the complex morality system that exists in Fable. Since morality is subjective, your actions will affect every citizen differently. For example, your actions may be approved by some, but others won’t exactly be happy.
Here’s one example of how your choices will affect the world of Albion: you’ll interact with a character early in the game, and you’ll have to deal with him as you see fit. For example, if you kill him, his corpse will exist in Albion for the rest of the game, which will affect local housing prices.
