Good news, racing fans: you won’t have to wait long to get your hands on Forza Horizon 6. The rumors were true: the game will launch May 19th for Xbox Series X|S, with a PS5 release coming later this year.
Japan is a place that the team wanted to visit “for a very long time,” developer Playground Games said during today’s Developer Direct. They’re aware of the expectations fans have for the game, and are looking to deliver in a big way.
Japan is the largest open world map in Forza Horizon history, featuring unparalleled verticality, seasonality, and more. The Tokyo City region, for example, is “five times larger than any city ever before.”

From open-world racers to high-octane arcade thrills, these games deliver the speed, style, and freedom every Forza Horizon fan craves.
For those unfamiliar, the Forza Horizon franchise is all about working your way up from nothing, and that gameplay loop isn’t going anywhere for Forza Horizon 6. “All of Japan outside the Horizon festival is yours to explore at your own pace.”
In order to deliver an open world Japan that was worth the wait, Playground Games brought on a cultural consultant to ensure authenticity. This includes a cavalcade of collectibles that will be tracked in the game’s Adventure Journal: cars, landmarks, easter eggs, and more.
Forza Horizon 6 Will Launch with the Most Cars in Franchise History
Forza Horizon 6 will feature 550 cars at launch. The game’s roster has also been fully overhauled to improve in-game balancing. There are also new ways to expand your car collection, including those collectibles that are waiting to be discovered in-game.
The new Horizon Rush event acts as an obstacle course as you race your way around Japan. One such example from the Developer Direct showcase is an obstacle course taking place at the Tokyo Docks. Sadly, it was more of a glimpse than anything else. That’s not the only new gameplay feature; car meet6’sill allow you to meet up with others online and participate in the events you know and love, as well as Forza Horizon time attack circuits (a seamless open world event where you compete against friends for the best time during a certain section of the road).

You don’t always need to go off-track to enjoy a race.
Another glimpse we got of the game, Forza Horizon 6’s player home, is located in the same Tokyo Docks area of the map. One area where this shines is the new customizable player garages, which let fans decorate their space however they see fit. Additionally, new to Forza Horizon 6 is “The Estate,” which lets you customize your player house beyond just the house itself and the garage.
It should come as no surprise that music, which has always been an essential part of the Forza Horizon experience, is being teased to feature a diverse collection of artists, including local artists from Japan.
Forza Horizon 6 launches on Xbox on May 19th, 2026. The PlayStation 5 version isn’t quite ready yet, but it is still slated to launch this year.
