Having done a little music study myself over the years, I am always dialled right into trying to understand the process with which composers and music directors build out a soundtrack around a video game or another piece of media.
Today, Wishfully Studios and Thunderful are sharing one such breakdown of craft with Takeshi Furukawa — the BAFTA-nominated composer who is working to bring Planet of Lana 2: Children of the Leaf, auditorily, to life.
In his dev blog, Furukawa welcomes viewers to the orchestral capital of the world — Budapest, Hungary — and invites them to take a listen to how darker story elements in this follow-up to 2023’s original puzzler make for a journey intended to be aged up, alongside the titular Lana.
The irony is that most of the dev blog features a more lighthearted, fast-paced major-scale composition built around Swedish “Kulning” cow-calling.
We do get into more dissonant piano triads, as Furukawa explains that his approach to this sophomore soundtrack is to keep it simpler and let the visuals shine.
Your ears should be open by now, and keep your eyes open, because today’s video is the first of many videos delving into various aspects of Planet of Lana 2.
As greed and power divide the tribes of their home planet, Lana and her little companion, Mui, must stand together against the forces reshaping their world – struggling not just for survival, but for the soul of their home.
Planet of Lana 2: Children of the Leaf launches on Xbox Series, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, and PC shortly!
