To make a name for yourself as the newest local on Starsand Island, there are multiple professions you can try out, some of which involve making use of the land around your homestead. Depending on how you want to approach them, those professions can lead to a very profitable future on the island.
One such profession is perhaps one of the most expected — farming. While it seems straightforward, there are still a number of things to keep in mind as you unlock new tools and crops. With that, here’s everything you need to know about farming in Starsand Island, including how to upgrade your Farmer Certification, where to get seeds, and how to grow crops.

How to Upgrade Farmer Certification in Starsand Island
The key to expanding your crop-growing capabilities in Starsand Island is by obtaining and then upgrading your Farmer Certification. After you first get settled at your home on the island, and Solara takes you through a pseudo-tutorial to get you started on the basics, you’ll then be free to seek out the local mentors for each of the game’s five professions.
These mentors are the ones who often own and run shops catered to their respective professions, where you can purchase supplies as needed, and they provide the quests that allow you to upgrade your certification status. Conveniently, these mentors are also the easiest NPCs to foster a romance with because of those quests.
In the case of farming, the mentor you want to visit is Graminova, whom you can usually find working in the gardens near the Happiness Seed Shop. Speak to him to pick up the ‘Sprouting Hope’ quest, which gives you Apprentice Farmer Certification upon completion. From there, you can then upgrade your certification to Junior Farmer, Intermediate Farmer, Senior Farm, and finally Expert Farmer.
How to Get Seeds in Starsand Island
To grow crops in Starsand Island, you, of course, need seeds to start with. While some can be obtained as quest rewards, namely from Graminova, your main source of seeds in the game is the Happiness Seed Shop, which is located on the outskirts of Starsand Town, next to Ethereal Styles.
Interact with the touchscreen hub on the shop’s counter, which will pull up the shop’s current inventory. As you upgrade your Farmer Certification status, you’ll be able to access higher tiers of seeds from the shop. While it’s ultimately up to you what you want to grow, if you’re looking to turn a profit from farming, be mindful of the seeds you purchase, as some yield better returns than others.
How to Grow Crops in Starsand Island
To grow crops in Starsand Island, you first need to plow some soil on the land around your home. For that, you need a Stone Hoe tool, which you’ll get during your starter quests with Solara. Once you have a Stone Hoe, equip it and the plow overlay will appear. Pick a section within the lit boundary around your home where you want your crops, and press the appropriate button to plow a new crop tile.
You can create as many crop tiles as you want, but it’s best to stick with what’s manageable. When first starting out with beginner tools and appliances, focus on a smaller batch of crop tiles until you get the hang of farming and unlock better tools. From that point, you can expand your crop field as needed.
Once your crop tiles are ready, you can then sow them with any seeds you have in your Bag. Make sure to pay attention to the stats of each seed type, particularly their growth period, available harvests, and the season(s) they can grow in. Furthermore, you can use Fertilizer to boost certain stats, but it’s not required. It’s best to save your Fertilizers for high-grade crops anyway, to ensure maximum returns.
Finally, make sure to water your crops as needed with your Watering Can, as their respective tiles will dry out over time. Eventually, you can upgrade to sprinklers to help make that task more efficient.
