Resident Evil Requiem devs were ‘in the dark’ about Nvidia DLSS 5 reveal

Resident Evil Requiem devs were 'in the dark' about Nvidia DLSS 5 reveal

Nvidia’s DLSS 5 controversy continues to simmer after the chipmaker showed off examples of the AI-powered technology on Monday. While Nvidia reps claimed that DLSS 5 represents “the most significant breakthrough in computer graphics since the debut of real-time ray tracing in 2018,” observers were quick to point out that the technology was significantly altering the artistic intent of developers, and not for the better, as evidenced by the bizarrely yassified face of Resident Evil Requiem‘s Grace Ashcroft that’s been making the rounds on social media. According to Insider Gaming, developers at Capcom were largely unaware the studio had entered into this partnership with Nvidia.

Nvidia plans to launch DLSS 5 this fall, and the tech will support games from developers like Bethesda, Capcom, NetEase, Tencent, Warner Bros., and Ubisoft. Anonymous sources at Capcom told Insider Gaming the announcement was especially shocking given that the company has been very “anti-AI” when it comes to Resident Evil Requiem and other unannounced titles. Staff at Ubisoft were equally taken aback, with one saying, “We found out at the same time as the public.”

Meanwhile, Ubisoft’s Charlie Guillemot praised the tech in an Nvidia press release. “Immersion is about making the world feel real. DLSS 5 is a real step towards that goal,” Guillemot said. “The way it renders lighting, materials and characters changes what we can promise to players. On Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it’s letting us build the kind of worlds we’ve always wanted to.”

It’s not uncommon for executives to keep rank-and-file staff in the dark about certain business decisions, but the Nvidia partnership may suggest a potential culture shift for Capcom. For one thing, the studio invested significant time and resources to ensure Grace and Leon felt like real human beings in Requiem. The actor who portrayed Grace, Angela Sant’Albano, recently told Polygon that the role required hours of grueling physical performance. She wasn’t alone in a recording booth, but in a motion-capture studio with her scene partners. “It brought humanity to the game in a way that makes it feel that much more real, so the story can shine, which was wonderful for an actor. I think that’s kind of the dream,” Sant’Albano said.

Elsewhere, Leon S. Kennedy actor Nick Apostolides told Polygon that his deep love for the series is a major reason his portrayal continues to resonate with audiences: “The OG fans also respect what I’ve done because they know I respect the source material, and I respect the performances that came in the past,” he said.

Even if studios don’t intend to use DLSS 5 to alter human performances, what we’ve seen so far suggests that the technology certainly runs the risk of distracting and detracting from those performances. In any event, we certainly haven’t heard the last of this controversy.
