It’s been a long time coming, but modding platform GGMods finally has an official launch date.
The new community-driven mod portal is going to open its doors on April 13, with a series of launch events and prizes to celebrate the occasion.
As part of launch celebrations, GGMods is hosting a series of community events. The highlight is the opening Modathon, which boasts a cash prize pool of $7,000, on top of $1,000 in games for participating modders.

Even those who are not particularly apt at creating mods have a shot at some of the prizes. Regular GGMods users will have a chance of winning game bundles, Steam gift cards and Discord Nitro subscriptions.
Players who refer a friend will get one extra entry in the Steam gift card draw, with more details to be revealed closer to the launch date.
GGMods Aims to Democratize Modding
Modding sites are about as old as computer gaming, but despite this long history, modders have not had an easy time getting anything other than a thumbs up for the hundreds, sometimes thousands of hours invested in making games better, all while sites make money off their mods due to ads.
The central premise of GGMods is the ability to earn money based on user engagement, giving modders a transparent financial incentive for their quality work without the upkeep associated with setting up and running donations or subscription pages.

To help kickstart things, early creators looking to join GGMods can apply to the Founding Modders program. On top of getting early access to new features, Founding Modders can receive a cash advance to bring their existing work onto the platform.
In the long run, the site’s direction will be dictated by user voting and community feedback, avoiding situations where modders are forced to stick with platforms that don’t listen to their input due to a lack of alternatives.
