Bungie Didn’t Start Working On Destiny 3 Because Of “how much money it would take”

Yesterday, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier revealed the unfortunate news that Bungie is likely gearing up for layoffs and apparently has no projects currently greenlit as it ends support of Destiny 2 and focuses on Marathon. Now, he’s shed a little light on why they don’t have anything.

The obvious question on everyone’s lips is why isn’t Bungie working on Destiny 3, especially since it’s the company’s biggest franchise. Well, Schreier has an answer, as he says he was asked numerous times why Bungie didn’t start working on Destiny 3 as soon as The Final Shape – Destiny 2’s big story finale – launched a few years ago.

According to Schreier, “The answer (as it usually is) is how much money it would take.”

It puts Bungie in a weird position, because Destiny 3 would most likely be their biggest potential money-earning project, but it sounds like they don’t have the funding available to really get it started, and Sony presumably isn’t interested, either. Perhaps if Marathon was performing better, the story would be different, but so far its numbers have been softer than Sony and Bungie were probably hoping for.

So, where does this leave Bungie? According to Schreier’s article from the other day, people within the company are actively pitching things but nothing has been greenlit. That just leaves Marathon to pay the bills.

It doesn’t paint a great picture for the future of Bungie. Hopefully, they manage to find their destiny.

Sorry. I couldn’t resist.
