Destiny 2 Fans Launch Last Ditch Attempt to Save Bungie

Nearly nine years after Destiny 2 launched and about five months after Bungie released its latest expansion, Renegades, the Washington-based developer has announced that the FPS MMO will receive its final content update on Tuesday, June 9th.

This was revealed via a press release on Bungie.net entitled “Destiny 2: Every End Is a New Beginning” which detailed that following The Final Shape expansion, Bungie and Sony have chosen to no longer produce new content for Destiny 2 and instead have the developer focus on “incubating” future games.

Destiny 2 Is Dragging Sony’s Finances Down, Says Report

Sony’s games division is still performing well, though.

Destiny 2‘s last content update will be called Monument of Triumph, which will introduce new small character beats to leave some of Destiny‘s most popular characters in “interesting places” while introducing small gameplay updates and the return of fan-favorite content such as the Sparrow Racing League.

While Destiny 2 will remain playable beyond June 9th, just like the first Destiny game is today, many fans have expressed their disappointment and frustration with this news, especially after hearing how some Bungie developers weren’t aware of D2‘s shuttering, and have called for Destiny 3 to begin development.

Bungie’s Tumultuous Time at Sony

Ever since Bungie was acquired by Sony in mid 2022, the critically acclaimed developer has faced numerous obstacles and struggled to release content that pleased most fans and Sony officials.

Most of Destiny 2‘s expansions released since 2022 were mixed to say the least, with many such as Renegades giving the game a bit of an identity crisis as it began to heavily crossover with other franchises like Star Wars and For Honor.

Bungie was additionally expected to help Sony produce other profitable live service games on top of releasing new content for Destiny 2, with many Bungie devs going on to work on the catastrophic hero shooter Concord and Bungie releasing the extraction shooter Marathon following numerous legal issues and delays.

Marathon launched to an overall mixed reception, with many enjoying the game’s hyper-sci-fi aesthetic and intense PvP gameplay, but it failed to attract a large audience, with only 11,000 people consistently playing the game daily on Steam nowadays compared to its peak of about 77,000 players when it launched in March.

Bungie has been further affected by numerous layoffs since 2022 as part of cost-cutting measures, often in response to poor sales numbers related to Destiny 2‘s expansions, with the developer losing over 750 staff members since 2022 and more expected to be laid off after June 9th.

Many Bungie staff were even unaware of D2‘s shuttering until the press release was revealed on Bungie.net on Thursday, May 21st.

Bungie staff were even unaware of D2‘s shuttering until the press release was revealed on Bungie.net on Thursday, May 21st.

According to Forbes journalist Paul Tassi, “Almost all of Bungie did not know about this until it was announced.” He went on to clarify that, “… there were some devs working on June content that did know but were prevented from sharing.”

The Fates of Destiny 2 and Destiny 3

Destiny 2 was originally slated to receive its next major content update, Shadow & Order, this year after several delays, but that update has reportedly been canceled, and its remaining assets and content have already been reworked into the Monument of Triumph.

It’s currently unknown how this shuttering of new content will impact the Destiny mobile spinoff Destiny: Rising, though that game will still likely receive new content for a while as it’s developed and published by NetEaseGames, making it the best viable option for players hoping to get a fix on new Destiny content in the wake of D2‘s shuttering.

Destiny fans may flock to Destiny: Rising, but there’s a growing number of players calling for Bungie and Sony to begin production on Destiny 3 following the Monument of Triumph’s announcement.

Harley Casto has started a Change.org petition titled “Petition Sony to develop Destiny 3,” which calls for Bungie and Sony to begin developing Destiny 3 with “new adventures, fresh storylines, and innovative gameplay features” that would inspire new generations of Guardians.

In the mere days since the Monument of Triumphs announcement, the petition has already garnered nearly 100,000 signatures as of the time of this writing, but even if the petition is successful, it may be a while until Destiny 3 development begins, as Bungie has already devoted most of its remaining staff to working on Marathon content.

According to Tassi, no other game has been greenlit or is even in production at Bungie currently, suggesting that those future games in incubation that Bungie noted in the press release are still in conceptual stages and haven’t even been presented to Sony yet.

Bungie and Destiny‘s future may entirely rest on Marathon‘s shoulders, but given the state of the game only a mere months following its launch, Bungie may be doomed to suffer more layoffs and setbacks in the immediate future, especially after Sony has become more wary of committing to expensive projects amid ever-increasing global economic pressure.
