The Japanese company has once again published a patent that is surprising, to say the least. It’s for a controller equipped with buttons capable of hardening based on certain parameters.
The buttons would be made of a material called magneto-viscoelastic elastomer, which can harden or soften thanks to magnets attached to them. The resistance would change depending on the type of game or the player’s preferences.
The game could also directly adjust the stiffness based on an action to be performed during a specific sequence. Furthermore, the documents show that Sony might opt for fluid-filled membranes to achieve a similar effect. Finally, another concept shows a button that would harden around the user’s finger to simulate being grabbed by an enemy or a vehicle getting stuck.
Of course, since this is merely a patent, there’s no guarantee that such a controller will ever come out.
